Mike Lombardi has 'inside info' on why Hurney was fired

I think he was the fall guy. It was meant to be a message to the coaching staff. They have twice had 10 or more days in between games and much didn't change with the offense. Now after the firing there is a sudden change in the offensive philosophy. It’s nothing like a little fear to get the message across. I think Rivera was clueless with what to do with the offense and allowed a stubborn Chud to tinker with a offense that everyone assumed would be well above average based on last year’s results. I know it has probably been said plenty of times before but with last year’s offense and this year’s defensive improvement we would have been 6-1 and the talk of the NFL.

.

Totally agree! This is the message. The one weakness in the organization that could be cut at this time with practically zero impact to the team and finances was Hurney. The message was clear IMHO - produce now or pack your bags.

Firing the HC right now would be surrendering the remainder of the season - firing coordinators would be essentally the same surrender. The non-contract GM was the most convienant option with the least impact.

He did not say that and I seriously doubt it is Rivera. If Richardson wanted the coach gone he'd simply be gone and he surely would not still be there now. Think about it.

I would assume it is player related.

The highest paid player on the team maybe?

The offensive captain?

Both?

Personel, coaching staff move, meh.

JR is sick of being a laughing stock of the NFL on par with the Cleveland and jacksonvilles of the world.

Let's all pray some competent people are brought in to reverse the train wreck this organization has been since the Arizona ass kicking 2008 Post Season.

Id like to have Lombardi as a talent evaluator... He was all over Kolb being a bust and not understanding the hype outta Philly...all over Gabberts shaky footwork and Pocket Panic..

All GMs have bad moments and the best hit 50% of their picks..Hurney was like at 45% (avg) in the last 7 years.. Yeah he was the Raiders GM but is that fair to any GM wile the crypt Keeper was alive?!

I would speculate that JR was not specific--does not micromanage that much, but he knew changes were needed. MH did not know what to do. He was fairly strapped, due to his shopping spree with Daddy's credit card a few years back. when he rewarded all of his draft picks that have not busted with contracts.

Did he really think that there was $24M+ on Dwill's tires? Made as much sense as the delhomme deal. Did he really need to pay Charles Johnson, a 1-hit wonder at the time, $76 million? Did he really think Godfrey was good enough to give him a big deal?

Marty's moves are as bad as Matt Millen's.

If you're going to spend a fortune on 2 RBs, then you should build a dominant run blocking O-line and run the ball a lot. We don't have a powerful run blocking O-line, so our RBs and all that money is going to waste. The loss of Otah is part of the problem, but we really should have used FA and the draft to add more than just one starter with very good run blocking ability. Campbell was known to have a learning disability, but we traded for him anyway. He hasn't even been activated all season, yet he started at OG for the Raiders. Why not start him at RG? Or RT? My guess is that our coaching staff has failed to teach him our offense. Well these failures and bad decisions, combined with unfocused players, has resulted in a total disaster of a season. Rivera is right in saying our O-line is getting beaten up front, and it's his fault. He knew Williams and Hangerter were weak in run blocking, and Kalil is undersized (although usually effective). He had every opportunity to pick up the offensive linemen we needed to have a dominant rushing attack. He failed to do so, and now his job is on the line.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
