How long does Cam Newton get a pass?

If the Panthers keep losing beyond this season, despite coaching and player changes, where does the buck stop?

I'm asking this because I've read a lot of posts of fans defending Cam, blaming the O-Line, saying he's out there trying to do it alone and he needs help. There is some validity to that and he's definitely earned some time to get it right in Carolina. A new coaching staff with some upgrades at key positions might be enough to turn it around.

But what would it take for you to say he's not the answer? When does he stop getting a "pass". Two, three more seasons of the same results we've seen this past season + 1/2?

He's not getting a pass. There are just a lot of people who can look at this and say that, while Cam DOES have areas he can improve on drastically, he is not even in our top three problems right now. His own flaws as a young player are being magnified by the extremely poor support he has from both his coaches and the rest of the offense.

I, and I hope everyone else, are a long way from giving up on a player like that who has obviously been mishandled / badly coached. I mean it is extremely telling to me that he was mechanically a better player with no offseason when the coaches didn't get a chance to screw with him. Not speaking on results but on the mechanics of how he plays the game. He himself was a better player without this staff's interference.

I'll start to wonder about him if the trend continues with good coaching. Not before.

We are nowhere near ready to give up on him. He has shown tremendous 'flashes' and in my opinion, just needs a better coach and blocking to be a Top 10 guy every week.

Simone noticed this last week, Cam never gets coaching on the sideline. This to me is a terrible sign. He should have a coach with him whenever he isn't in the game.

I'd say he has a minimum of 2 more full seasons.

I don't think he's getting one now, at least not from everyone.

Yes there are "everybody's fault but Cam's" posters, but while they may be more vocal, I don't know that they're more numerous.

he's a part of the problem. most acknowledge this, but they also ackknowledge that it's just a part of the problem and one that can be fixed with time, experience, a better system, and better coaching (and maybe a sports psychologist).

it's only a 4 year contract that was only worth $25mil.

if it's not a good fit, then we move on.

it's all up to jerry, tho.

if he wants cam to stay he's gonna have to 1)pay the man more than any QB out there and 2) put a team and coaching staff around him that will win and make him want to stay (which should be happening right nw anyway).

I honestly feel like we need to make Cam a game manager type QB until he develops the necessary pocket skills and presence. The offense should not be shoved 100% onto Cam like it is. This offense is live or die off of what Cam is able to do or not do. The pressure should be on that running game and the 80 mil that was invested in it.

Coaching staff needs to take some accountability and understand they are not developing this guy to be a top QB. The scheme and play calling has been horrible. Thats a bad recipe for a young QB. Make it easy for him. RUN THE BALL WITH STEWART!!!!!!! GOD *$*%(&$*%&

Cam has some very Ben Roethlisberger type qualities. Except early on in Pittsburgh, they had Tommy Maddox behind him (who was a quality starter for them for a few years), and they had a top defense and running game. Carolina has neither of these things. The defense is getting there but still, isn't where it would need to be to overcome a young QB.

I don't think he is getting a pass. Sometimes learning is a rough process. I heard it mentioned before but I remember when everyone was trashing Eli but 2 Super Bowls later, he is mentioned as elite . There is some issues that he needs to work on though. Footwork is my man concern but it can be fixed. I'm not ready to give up on him. Things like this take time but I would like more interactions between him and the coaches. Like him going over still photos on what the defense has been doing. Or like him and the o line talking. Something about that situation is weird but I can't pinpoint it

    • Watching those throws Drake Maye was making on a dead run threading lasers into tight coverage on the sidelines over and over in that game against the Bills... these people need to go watch that and be honest with themselves.
    • why rig the scenario with the "as a passer" tag.   I mean, I assume you do that because Bryce needs help in the argument.  If we are just talking players and no contacts?   I mean, give me Young over Russell Wilson.   That's it.   I'd put him on par w/ Penix, Fields, McCarthy and Rattler,  so that's a wash.  Give me everyone else over Bryce.  And I'm not handicapping the other players as passing only because when you start doing that it's really meaningless.
    • McCarthy to date, for sure. That's a very early sample size, however. Russell Wilson is a backup. Not sure Wilson wouldn't be better suited to our offense specifically, but at the bare minimum it's basically a wash. Hurts I would generally disagree with. I do think Hurts is likely to be less than stellar in our offense. Justin Fields - Agree. Fields is a significant threat on the ground but he sees the field as badly or worse than Bryce. And that's with significantly more reps. Spencer Rattler - I honestly thought this would be an easier call that it is. TBH, right now Rattler looks a lot better. Really almost across the board. Kyler - Murray is better. Basically across the board. Not significantly better, mind you. Trevor Lawrence is more debatable than it seems. Low completion percentages, tons of TO's.....he really has been quite bad this year in Jax. He is considerably more talented than Bryce but the results have been marginally better. Tua - Tua is a little more dynamic of a player but he is a TO machine. Tend to agree. Caleb Williams. Not sure on this. Williams is still struggling to be consistent but his upper end is WAY higher than Bryce. He shows it fairlu frequently, as well. Probably would rather be working through Caleb's issues than Bryce. Penix - 100%. This guy stinks. Cam Ward. This is a little tough. Again, far higher ceiling on Ward and he shows flashes but it's been a mess there in Tenn. Probably lean towards Bryce here.
