Chucky loves Tavon Austin

Gruden is Tavon's biggest fan according to Pat Yasinskas. Dude is high on Austin, and he may just be right.

"He's my favorite player in the draft," Gruden, now an ESPN analyst, said in a conference call with the national media. “I'm sensitive to him because he's 5-foot-8 like myself. When you watch the kid play, he's magnificent. He's a great return man -- punts, kicks. He lines up at tailback, and he plays like a tailback. He looks like Darren Sproles at tailback and he looks like Wes Welker in the slot."

I've seen him be magnificent after the catch, all-purpose yardage, look, he's tough," Gruden said. “Tremendous stop and start quickness and flatout finishing speed. I've seen quick guys, fast players, but I've never seen very many that have the combination of speed and quickness like Austin has. He ran for 8,000 yards as a high school tailback in Maryland, and he averaged 7 or 8 yards a carry this year when they handed it to him. He's just a fun, deluxe joker to have on your football team. He's going to make an impact, I believe, big time."

You know I have mixed feelings about Austin, but I am starting to get that same feeling I had about Cam Newton when people were dogging him out: If Tavon Austin is there for the taking, we may forever be saying he is the one that we let get away---the perfect complement and weapon, ready-made for Cam Newton.

The Bills reportedly have Austin high on their radar, but I could live with that. But, to think that the Bucs sneak in right before us, or especially the Saints right after us, leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I like him, but Gruden likes EVERYBODY.

Well, it certainly seems that way.

Wouldn't it be ironic if we draft Austin, Rivera sucks, and then Gruden---chomping at the bit---would be hired to coach Cam and Tavon Austin? Just thinking...Anyway, I am a Rivera guy right now.

Rivera has been wanting a Sproles type guy since he took over..Hurney obliged by signing Tolbert(who is the complete opposite)

The Hyphen is still available. LaRod Stephens-Howling could really be a poor man's Darren Sproles. Just saying. Pittsburgh has him on their radar. I could easily see them taking Austin if he'd fall to them. If they weren't as cash strapped as we are, D-Will would have been an adequate piece of trade bait.

Id agree but KoolKat will post blast this thread with the same arguments from the 3000 other posts in Austin threads.

KoolKat makes me tired of saying or reading Tavon's name...or Lafell's for that matter lol.

I'll say it - SMOKESCREEN

Austin isn't the typical WR the Bills draft that fits their mold. They need an outside WR to stretch the filed as Stevie Johnson plays better in the slot going across the field rather than vertical. I honestly think they are trying to get a team to move up to grab Austin so they can justify dropping back into the first to draft Nassib OR just using as a smokescreen to cover up their intentions to grab Nassib at 8.

    • Me and you clearly have different definitions of production. If you remove the 2023 season where Thielen had just over 1k yards he is 43rd on our all time receivers list just ahead of Jonathan Mingo. And before you ask why would we remove that season? Well a couple reasons. For one thing we won a whopping 2 games. And for the biggest. Thielen was 14th in targets in 2023. We absolutely force fed him the ball all season and finished with the 32nd passing offense. For comparison sake 33 year old Jerricho Cotchery eclipsed over 1k total yards in just 2 more games and with 67 less targets than Thielen did in that 2023 season. He has above average hands. That's it. We overpaid him because we were desperate and overvalued him. That's the reality no matter how many times you or anyone else wants to quote me and get defensive about it.
    • He's played great and it was a win-win (rare free agent) for both parties.  One of the points is he hasn't made enough difference to "waste" 35 million on. Another point is by the time Panthers are hitting their prime, he would have taken snaps away from young WRs/TEs/RBs. "Thus" in the long term, hurting the teams new future "window."  But I dare think of the monkey poo of a offense the Panthers had without him the past 2 years. Lack of talent leads to many problems, including paying a 35 year old to be somewhat respectable. Hes one of few that cared enough and made a effort. Plus you know he's done great stuff in many other ways for the team, community juggernaut, leadership, etc.  Judgement is for AT and his 3 year panther career!!
    • But it has gotten a little wacky. RBs-https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/_/position/rb     A couple months ago iggles made Bark the highest guaranteed RB, jeanty was until then. That's what matters the guarantee. A rookie never played a down was the leader, until iggles howie made things right.  If a safety gets drafted in the top 8 or so, he would have the highest money too or very close to it.    Add in TEs and C too.    Even with the fixed %, the numbers are getting too much for a player that's not proven themselves.     Plus anytime a QB is drafted it screws up the contracts for players around and if next year a punter gets drafted at the same 90th spot, they want the same contract with the 5.7% increase. Teams would be laughing.    Its just reached this point. Another 10 years and I bet the vets will be crying.
