Scott Fowler: Wins are Cam's litmus test this year

top dawg

excuses, excuses, excuses. qb's have always been judged on wins, leadership, and play in crunch time. cam has not stacked up in any of these areas. its amazing luck had 7 fourth quarter comebacks in his rookie season, absorbed 41 sacks, was hit about every time he threw the ball, showed great toughness and leadership skills, and according to most in panther nation he cant play a lick. wow!

polly, I aint a skins fan, and you can really hang your hat on cam beating the skins twice, he must be great

Brady with a good defense = 3 Super Bowl wins

Brady without a good defense = 0 Super Bowl wins

Manning with a decent defense (in the playoffs that year anyway) = 1 Super Bowl win

Manning without a decent defense = 0 Super Bowl wins

Rodgers with a good defense = 1 Super Bowl win

Rodgers without a good defense = 0 Super Bowl wins

Brees is the only anomaly, a good QB that won the Super Bowl without a good defense.

On the flip side, mediocre QBs win the Super Bowl all the time if they have great defenses.

I think that it pretty much goes without saying that you need a great team overall to win the Super Bowl, but teams get into the playoffs and even the Super Bowl without good defenses, much less great ones. But, like I said, our defense ranked 10th last year, higher than the offense. Being that we added some key pieces to the line, and some ancillary (if not good) pieces behind the line, along with another year of experience, I believe there will be less question marks, not more. A beast of a D-line goes a long way towards overall defensive efficiency and stopping power. It can flat out cover a multitude of sins at times.  Considering recent history, I think that we're more apt to be fooled by the offense than the defense, notwithstanding that both showed growth during the second part of the season. The thing is though that the offense seemed to show growth during Cam's first season toward the end of the year, but we were all witness to the offensive slump last year.

This brings up an interesting debate does Cam have the support cast to take it over the top this year?  If Cam excels we can win a few more games but I see us having too many glaring holes to be much better than a 9-7 team. Teams with great defenses will have their way with the right side of our OL.With Piggy at RG our running game will not dominate.

On defense we should be better but I think the impact of our two new DTs want be fully realized until the following year plus our secondary is still suspect.

Superbowls are not the only way to judge a QB. Is Marino not great because he never won it? Also the fact that the Pats get so close even with no defense is a testament to Brady. If we are going to keep discussing Newton like one of the best at some point it needs to translate to wins. He's a big man, he can take criticism even if some of our fans are unable to deal with it.

the colts played a weak schedule and luck turned the ball over a poo ton which finally bit them in the ass in the playoffs

by the way here are their 4th quarter/close game stats:

QB's have always gotten too much credit for wins and too much blame for losses....this is just the way that it is.

But, wins are what matters and it is time for Cam to deliver them.

And stop with the damn excuses.

Cam has plenty of weapons....Smith, LaFell, Olsen, DWill, Stew, Tolbert, etc

I expect this season to be the major turning point in Cam's development.  People forget that he was a QB coming out of college that was likely to be a project.  His college experience in a pro style passing game was VERY limited.  His rookie year stats elevated the expectations too much.  The game is slowing down for him....he is getting more comfortable in the offense...he is learning/developing.

Cam's fumble and/or Nak's brain fart in Atlanta

Smitty falling down in Chicago....yielding a Pick 6

Cam's throw in the dirt against Seattle

Cam does need to step up and show he can drive the team late to win a game or preserve a win. We finished 7-9 last year.  In order for us to have a winning season if Cam had made 2 plays at the end of the game we go 9-7.  The two games?   The fumble in the first Atlanta game on 3rd and 1 which would have given us a first down and the whole "go for it on fourth down" debate would have been moot.  The second game- the pass in the ground against Seattle when he had a wide open guy in the endzone. Forget the other choices, those 2 moments could have not only given us a winning season but turned the season around.  I think the Atlanta loss could have been a turning point if we had won.

Situations will arise again this year and it will be up to Cam to be the one to lead the offense.  You can make all the excuses you want for him but the quarterback get the huge bucks and along withthat the praise or blame for wins or losses.  Deservedly so......

I will have the last word because you are being fuging retarded. It wasn't a "big deal" for you to comment on us not talking about something relevant to the conversation.  Feel free to keep chiming in your two cents of why people shouldn't be talking about something when you are telling me not to do the same to you.  You have done this with multiple people and you still aren't getting the hint?

watch out or he'll start talking about your big ego.

i've got the clown on ignore now because of what you wrote and my inability to remember any comment that he makes about football or the panthers. it's usually some commentary on his perception of what someone is saying and it usually has to do with them "obsessing" or being "butthurt" or something like that. it's just not worth the effort and it's not even interesting anymore. i swear it's worse than trying to discuss stuff with pffl because even with him and guys like him there was some football element to it. with this guy it's just trying unsuccessfully to act superior.

He has been getting on my nerves for quite some time now.

    • Let's be completely honest about this... Our WR room is AT and a bunch of question marks. Thielen is the only guy we know who knows the route tree completely, understands play calls and can regularly get open/beat close coverage when necessary. He's long in the tooth, isn't the speediest guy on the field but he plays like a pro, starting level wide receiver. Xavier, last season looked great at first, but man he kind of petered out down the stretch and would disappear in a number of games. He wasn't reliable on routes or getting open and where he was supposed to be a king at contested catches, he often looked a bit intimidated. I'm not saying he's a washout by any means. Anyone with his size, speed and catch radius could make it big in the NFL, but can he do it? He'll need to show more than he did in the preseason before we can really rely on him as a WR1 or WR2.  Coker was a revelation last season, he really played way above his (non)draft status and flashed multiple times in games and was a steady performer. What we need to find out, though, is whether he was benefiting from being an unknown that wasn't getting maximum effort from opposing DBs or if he was just outworking and outhustling everyone on the field. We should find out this season. We sure as hell didn't find out much in the pre-season (from him or any receiver or QB for that matter). He's still a question mark, but I think he has the look of the real deal. He might be this generation's next Thielen. Now, let's talk about Tet. High first round draft pick, first true WR off the board this year. Stellar career out west in college. Has the swagger of the WR1. And man, y'all are going to get mad about this but... he comes across as a mook. And in the pre-season he performed, well, not so great against poor opposition of second and third stringers. Yeah, he caught that one moonshot ball in the first game but really, nothing else lighting the place up. Rookie endzone drop in that game, too. He's still young and adjusting, I'm sure, but I was hoping to see something of a breakthrough kind of guy. I'm still looking. Hunter Renfro? Gosh, I hope he can make the team and make a comeback to his old form. It would be such a great story. But maybe neither one of those happens. We won't know until Tuesday and then, if he makes it past there it could be weeks. So, TL;DR: AT is all we can bank on right now. We couldn't afford to let him go considering the number of unknowns we'd be throwing out there for our QB, who himself is still an unknown. One thing to add: Our receivers coaching group has their work cut out for them. I hope they are up to the task, but the pre-season gave me little reason to believe in them. And I really need something to believe in here in Carolina.
    • Same I think Randsom is a baller..... hopefully we don't have to suffer through 4-8 games of Scott blowing azz to get him on the feild.
    • Linebacker is the biggest need - I hope we figure out a way to address it. Krys Barnes is the only one who even moderately flashed.  Super nervous about Trevin/Rozeboom as a duo (Still like Trevin) I'd be excited if we had a better vet to mentor Trevin.  Or a better younger guy to support Rozeboom.  They just don't fit well and it may be a big problem against the run, even with our DL much improved.
