4th and long.... and going for it?

Okay, fine.

I just see all these people talking about wanting "killer instinct Ron" and he opts out of FGs and just gives the opponent the ball out of "mercy".

I don't like that at the NFL level. Opposing coach didn't counter and say that he would out of respect for that just run the clock out.

Our announcers even included a former NFL HC.....and it being a "mercy" offering didn't even cross his mind. I didn't like it....others can

You mean that guy who referred to the rushing tandem of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Joseph?

That same guy who once referred to us as the Pitt Panthers?

We've been at the other end of that before.  I have no issue with it.

No. They didn't try to run the clock out. In fact on the next possession they got after that mercy ball they called a quick timeout so they could use that next possession for own agenda.

Again, either you want a killer instinct no mercy coach or you don't....people claim they want it from Ron and today was some type of turning point for him. IMO that play just shows Ron at heart isn't that. That isn't a bad thing....necessarily I just dislike it personally at this level.

Not a coach in our division would do it.

And points matter in professional football. You don't need to try to run up scores but take what you have

They took their starting quarterback out.

I think you have to look at this from several directions:

Not scoring points = not having to kick off = little risk of injuries.

Not punting = no risk of them running one back and raining on our parade

It ran a few more seconds off tham the other options

It let our defense "finish" the game - since they owned it all day long = morale/trust

Statement by RR = "I get it - I should have went for it in the past".

This would have never happened on our side of the field - so does not matter in the least.

lol i guess if you have to complain about something in a 38-0 blowout this is as good as anything.

some of us aren't used to too many positive things happening. it's going to take a while.

re: that OP, tho....smh.

you could say that last scoring drive we had was overkill. the team didn't back off in the second half like they used to. they kept the pedal down all the way until the last couple minutes.

as much as i would have liked to see us drop 40 on them, esp. for last year, i don't have any problem at all for ron not going for it in that situation.

there's a line beteen being dominant and being an ass. rivera didn't cross it and i'm cool with that. he ran that game as aggressively as i had hoped he would.

if you want to complain/nitpick about that, go right ahead. for me, tho....i'm just going to revel in the fact that i just saw a team that got out on the field and dominated the whole game.

here's the thing about not kicking that FG...the giants knew we could have added another 3 points to their nightmare day and we didn't. they are going to have to live with the fact that we took it easy on them and still beat them by 38 points. imo, that does more damage to an already beaten down ego than adding the 3 points would have.

sure, the giants still had some fight in them, but this was tantamount to us just knocking them down again and again and again and when we knew that there was nothing that they could do that could matter we just looked down at them, shook our head, and walked away saying "it's just not worth the energy".

some may see it as class, but i see a move like that as a sign of power. we DOMINATED that team from beginning to end and there wasn't a thing that they could do to stop it so we did what they couldn't do...stop us from scoring.

we made a statement there that says "here...on this day...in our house...NO ONE stops us. we decide when we score. not you. and right now...we're bored with you. we're tired of playing with this little nearly dead mouse and now we're just going to walk away."

perfect post. it was actually more disrespectful (albeit still class) to do what we did. lol

38-0 no point in going for the fg. Every coach with any respect for football does that. I know we are rarely up big, but how do you not know that.

I think it's more disrespectful to tell someone: "hey, I know we are crushing you right now so instead of playing hard and taking the points, we will give you the ball back so we don't hurt your feelings."  Going for a touchdown on that play, that would have been disrespectful, not adding another measly 3 points.  We basically told them we are taking it easy on them now.

I'm of the belief that you play until the other team concedes defeat, and you do that by taking your starters out, until then, we ball.

Last year we pulled Cam, which was us conceding/waving the white flag.

I'm not saying, we go for the TD there, but you definitely don't pass up on the field goal.

I find it hard to believe this thread has gone on so long.  It is testament to one poster's ability to argue and never admit they are wrong.  All the discussion about what was more disrespectful or worse is irrelevant.  There is an unwritten rule in the NFL that good coaches who want to be around for awhile and who respect football don't usually cross.   And that is you play the game hard as long as the outcome is in question.  When it is not you do what we did which is not run up the score.  The same as when the game is over you shake hands at the middle of the field.  Do some jerks ignore that or refuse to do it?  Yes.  Does that make it right?  Absolutely not.  In the end most folks remember this is a game and there are both unwritten and written rules you follow.  Like taking cheap shots when no one is looking.  Do some players do it?  Absolutely.  Have some of our own done it?  Absolutely.  But it doesn't make it right and it has no place in modern football.  I laugh when I see people use Sean Payton as a justification for doing something as if that guy has ever has any credibility as a coach with integrity.

You can make all the excuses and justifications you want but I am glad our coach dd what he did.  I think anyone who would have done anything else is revealing something about their inner character rather than making a legitimate argument,
