Roman Harper Signs with the Panthers

Recommended Posts

So now that leaves us with probably just under 6M left with draft signings and more needs to fill... awesome

They dont need to sign the rookies until after June 1st. Also expect a long term deal for Hardy to free up about 5 million more.

Mitchell wanted, and got, significantly more than we could pay him.

Just flat out cutting Godfrey does nothing but hurt our cap. Now, as a June 1st cut, we save 4.5mil (I think that is right) How many times does it need to be said. We have no money. We could not offer Mitchell or Ginn Jr anywhere near what they were worth.

Harper is not a cornerstone. He is a stopgap until we get our ship righted. And, at the moment. He is the best SS on the roster.

Also, bringing "Murder" into your argument? Love that one.

He got five years, 25 million. We could easily have afforded that with a Godfrey cut. Wouldn't hurt the cap at all.

If that's the endgame then DG isn't cutout to be a GM.

Guess some don't get it...we are rebuilding the offense with our defense 75% complete. This offense sucked last year so most will be rookies as far as WR's go and maybe a vet or two to round it out (along with one or two rooks on the oline). Our front seven is set and the secondary will be mostly rookies or second year players and you will need a vet to bring it together, Harper has the experience to put the rooks in the right place at the right time.He probably will never make it to the end of his contract due to being just a plug and play vet. We have little money for these big dreams some of you have. Once we purge the crippling contracts in a year or two then we can play with the big boys.

Except hes old slow and fuging awful mitchell is young and fast

Two things that are vastly overrated. All that really matters is production. If you need a guy to do X and he can do X then who cares about his age or 40 time.

I misspoke when I said he'd bring the same production as Mitchell did. He's actually outproduced Mitchell as far as racking up tackles, sacks and forced fumbles. He's been one of the most productive in the box safeties in the NFL over his career.

The old Saints DC (that put together the worst defense in NFL history) let him get isolated and exposed in coverage, which is why he gets trashed as much as he does. Rob Ryan knew better and so will Rivera. I see him being used in a situational 2 down role, coming out in obvious passing situations and expect him to do very well in that role.

    • I really appreciate Bill explaining his methodology here because that gives interested parties a chance to try and recreate the results themselves. I believe that it's safe to assume that despite emphasis being placed on WRs that Chuba Hubbard is one of the Panthers' top-5 weapons. Considering targets, yardage, receptions, etc... Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette are also on the list. Jalen Coker's success might have snuck him in there as well. I can't draw a conclusion on who #5 is though. I've narrowed it down to Diontae Johnson, David Moore, Ja'Tavion Sanders, and possibly Rico Dowdle if they're taking into account his production for the Cowboys in 2024.
    • Unfortunately business is business especially when there are large sums of money on the table. Goes the same for player and ownership. Does not make it right either way.  Why would he not want to play for the niners? Closer to home with a team that has a chance of delivering a SB trophy.
    • I don’t know if it’s him bad mouthing his former situation in public or my pettiness but either way I’m not a fan. Dude was on playoff teams getting paid millions to entertain. I’m not better that because and I am better than that. You don’t bad mouth your former employer in public. Esp after getting over paid and two, poor little Russian baby didn’t get the playing spot he wanted. Rod had him exactly where is was supposed to be.  He had a mean lip check and did defend our players. Specifically the devils game around Christmas where is our Haula on his ass. Cool. Thank you. But don’t talk poo about us. Because it make you look like Haula.    “need to get as far away as possible”. fug off. Didn’t see Burnsy bad mouthing and his play dropped off too.    sorry, but Orlov doesn’t get a pass from me. See you twice a year…
