Newton-Benjamin Connection going right along

David Newton is reporting that Kelvin Benjamin will be staying in Charlotte next month, right along with Cam Newton.  Both will be working on their craft, and their connection.

"It's a huge plus," coach Ron Rivera said of his franchise quarterback and star receiver spending time together. "It's an opportunity to develop the rapport you need to have success."

Benjamin and Newton already have spent a lot of time together. Newton took the former Florida State star to his home in Atlanta during Memorial Day weekend to hang out on the lake, eat and play video games.

There even was good-humored ribbing about Benjamin's Seminoles beating Newton's Auburn Tigers in the BCS Championship this past season.

Benjamin chose to bond with Newton not only to learn all he can from the quarterback that will be throwing him passes, but to "stay out of trouble, do the right things."

He's staying in Charlotte the next month to do the same thing.

"I'm a rookie, so I've got to catch up with the older guys," Benjamin said.

Rivera isn't complaining.

"The more you get to know your teammates, the more you learn to believe in them and trust them," he said. "And that's important."

There was once a time when people were questioning whether Cam "gets it".  Not only has his natural born leadership skills evolved, but now his work ethic is being reflected in the effort of our new rookie.  I am telling you, ladies and gents, the future is bright!

A lot of great QBs are known for a particular connection with one receiver (Montana to Rice, Aikman to Irvin, etc).

Would love to see something like that develop here.

young to rice, elway to rod smith, jim zorn to steve largent (which actually sounds kind of like the relationship starting up between cam and benji), moon to carter, manning to harrison/wayne, brady to the open man who is where he's supposed to be.

speaking of zorn to largent....watch these two videos and tell me you don't see some similarities.

UPDATE

the bonding has gone one step further.

The happy couple was seen at Polished in South End enjoying a relaxing pedi and afternoon together.

So cute. BUT I LOVE IT

No happy endings at this place either.

    • Enlighten me. What is the mind of a Bryce simp thinking?
    • I don't want Canales fired but he's definitely opened the door to a fair amount of skepticism and criticism for some things. As far as Rico Dowdle goes I was thrilled with how well he had been playing earlier in the season but I questioned the sustainability of it myself. And it was by no means the first time a lesser known RB came out of nowhere and put up great numbers. It's why the position is so plug and play now. And we see Chuba has came back down to Earth as well following a very productive season last year. And the elephant in the room is it took the Panthers having the highest paid OL in the league in order for both of them to put up the numbers that they did. In terms of the lack of running game all around right now it leads to not just a question of the gameplan and the playcalling but to a question of how do we establish the run anyway with such a pathetic passing game? I mean that's a basic building block of modern football. You pass to setup the run and vice versa. We need to see this offense with a QB who isn't Bryce Young or Andy Dalton.
    • Rico could have run for 100+. Rico is a volume RB.  He is a better RB today than Hubbard.  Not a Hubbard diss. And Dave has ensured Rico never gets his volume to go off ever since he was critical publicly of Dave Canales
