i'm in my 40s and i still get called a young'un by some people quite older than me. again, not a big deal.

it doesn't mean child, it means younger than someone...at least in that context.

Random fact of the day, back in the 80s, underground cops used to try to stop guerrilla punk shows.  They would ask to go to these concerts, and the way the bands would know it was an undercover cop trying to shut it down was how they referred to the anticipated crowd.  Punks always refer to the people who go to concerts as "kids" so if they would call them "fans" or "concert goers" they knew the guy asking questions was a cop.
