Is Dave Gettelmen already the best GM in the south? ?

WOW!!

Gettleman is the best and it's not even close.

Bucs- Where to start? They drafted Mark Baron in the top 10, several picks ahead of Kuechly, only to let him go last year.

Falcons - Unable to get it done after betting the house on Julio. Their window has closed, culminating in Mike Smith's firing.

Saints - Had a nice run with Brees in his prime, but that time is over. Made huge mistakes in past offseasons, letting Sproles go, signing Jarius Byrd, hiring Rob Ryan as DC...not to mention BountyGate.

I spelled out how set we are by virtue of Gettleman's magic here lol I'm not typing it again. Copy & paste are my friends.

I was thinking that the Panthers are on the cusp of owning the NFCS for years. All 7 rookies we started will not be poached by other teams because they will not be FA's. Neither will Cam or Greg or Ryan. Dickson might as maybe Remmers too. RB's on contract. Think Harper signed a 2 year contract. Davis, Kuechly, Galant staying, maybe Klein & Blackburn too. Star & Short will be here, Edwards may retire. CJ will be here too, not sure about the rest of the DT's but Gettleman tends to prefer 2 year contracts where he can. Maybe cutting Hardy :( will mean signing more of our DT's if they need to be. But I know Gettleman will not overpay for anyone to stay.

And I do not for one second think he did the wrong thing by cutting Steve Smith.

We ended up with the mess on the o-line by Gross & Wharton both springing retirement on us. Before they retired, we were set on the line. So I do not put that on Gettleman either. And there's a very good chance that our rookie defensive backs were not ready and needed coaching up before they could start (imagine that, rookies needing coaching). Also, Bene played early but was injured.

IMO Gettleman is close to genius. He cares about the team and the players, even the ones he cut. For the most part, they were cut at a point where they were needed by other teams. Once we are out of cap hell I can see good things happening. Will he always strike gold? No, but nothing is perfect. After all, it is a business model that includes human beings and all the surprises they bring.

If there is a GM of the Year award, he definitely needs to be in the discussion.

I'll second guess the Smith and Hardy thing but everything else is going to plan so far..

I also still have a problem with the OT position we went into the season with.. He almost got Cam killed and Chandler getting a contract is driving me crazy but he did find Remmers so I'm good now.

Some might say that he didn't have many options. Nobody said he had no problem doing it, but he did. I don't think for one minute he was happy about it. However, to do something about it would be to sign Colliins to a big free agent contract (He was benched vs. us) or draft a player like Morgan Moses (and letting Ealy slip away).

Again, he inherited a mess. I agree that he has a great eye for talent--finding studs on practice squads, undrafted rookies and fourth and fifth rounders not only starting, but turning the ship around. Future looks bright, my friend. Winning does cure everything!

Great points. Sometimes doing nothing is the safer route.

Personally I would prefer to have Bell's expiring smaller contract, Remmer's very cheap 2 year contract and Ealy over Collins (big contract) and Moses.

If anything, DG strikes me as very disciplined to his approach of team building. To the fans it might be quite frustrating at times but I think it will be beneficial in the long term.

Haha winning cures everything doesnt it? No doubt he has a great eye for talent and he's found some gems but lets not forget he was also the guy who had no problem sending out nate chandler and byron bell as our tackles and roman harper and thomas decoud and antoine cason as our secondary

These never existed. We have no idea what you are speaking of? All we see is a 2-0 start and a 4-0 finish. 1-8-1 never happened. No one needs to know 7-8-1 is mediocre. All you need to know is the Panthers won the division and went to the playoffs.

Yes, I think it is already benefiting us.  I don't see too many players leaving and we have a lot of young, cheap contracts producing.  We probably arent going to the Super Bowl, but I would not bet against us for the next few years.  In my eyes, we need starters at LT, WR and SS, a nickel, depth at DT (cole, edwards are free agents). and depth at RB.

It's widely known that those mistakes he cut were largely pushed by rivera. He wanted veterans on the team. Nobody forced ron to start those guys.

And dave is the one who cut them

Yep, Ron and his disastrous personnel decisions. It was all Ron who shipped off players that led to a 12-4 season, and got all those free agent signings. Gettleman had nothing to do with that awful offseason he kept striking out week after week.

The players that get cut or benched; that is coaching. The players that get signed; that is the front office.

And all those horrible coaching decisions were probably Gettleman, right?

And Ron was forced to start those guys. Those were the guys he was given. He had to coach up the rookies and get them up to speed quickly so he could toss the garbage he was handed.

Harper, Cason, DeCoud, Avant, Bell, Chandler, Godfrey, Dickson and no return man can all be credited to Gettleman. Gettleman loves himself a project and a bargain bin free agent. That is the difference between a 10+ win season and a losing season.

Cam Newton, Derek Anderson, Greg Olsen, Ryan Kalil, Jonathan Stewart, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Charles Johnson, Greg Hardy, and Josh Norman are the factors that led to the 7 wins in 2014. Get rid of them and replace them with draft picks, udfas, bargain bin free agents, and projects you would be lucky to leave the season with 2 wins.

Gettleman chooses our starters now?

Maybe he should have used the Magic Madden GM function and got Tyron Smith in a trade with Dallas for Byron Bell, a future 3rd round pick, and a box of soda crackers?
