Would you rather.....Cam Newton edition

I hear a lot of disagreement on letting Cam be Cam. Ultimately, letting Cam be Cam is opening him up to taking monster hits because he runs. Monster hits have started taking their toll injury-wise with the young QB.

Another popular opinion is we should turn him into a pocket passer first, with the option to run if things break down. Obviously if you take less hits, theoretically you have a longer NFL career.

It's no secret that we have been winning the last few games by letting Cam be Cam and running wild. I'm not saying he wouldn't be successful as a pocket passer, but it's obvious his running ability quite simply gets the W.

Now I am interested in your thoughts on this hypothetical situation....which would you prefer???

Option A, let Cam be Cam.

-it's a very good possibility that we win 1 Super Bowl within two years

-we are only get Cam for 3-5 years due to career limiting injuries.

Option B, make Cam a pocket passer first, with option to run if things breakdown.

-we continue to develop Cam and bring in someone to help with his accuracy and footwork.

-we have a good outlook over the next 4-6 years but no real shot at being a true contender.

-we keep Cam healthy with the possibility of maybe getting lucky and winning a SB down the road

Option C: Let Cam be cam and build talent around him, while also giving him a oc that knows how to use talent.  A brick wall at oline that can pass and run block in any formation? check. Wide recievers who can run any route and get open constantly, as well as not have the case of the dropsies? Check. Tight ends that can run block and catch? check Rbs that can pass block and run the ball well even if blocking does break down? check.

Basically we would rely on cams legs to a certain extent but slowly get the point that it would be no longer a need to get defenses off their game. You can't just tell cam not to run at all. You have to gradually build up to it and get all pro talent around him. I still say keep a few running plays for him, not remove them outright.

Option B is the best option for both Cam's health and our ability to compete. Cam was doing fine earlier this season without running until his protection fell apart, we don't need him to be the run game, just the threat is enough.

Agree with this.  He needs to be a QB that is mobile, not a mobile QB...

He CAN be a running QB, but we really don't need him to be.

Ask yourself, how many big hits has Cam taken while running? Now, how many big hits has he taken trying to stand in a nonexistent pocket while our OL fails to protect him?

Cam has been running quite a bit lately, but isn't taking near as many big hits simply because the OL is doing a much better job.

To me, the answer is simple. Put the right talent in front of and around Cam and let Cam be Cam.

Cam be Cam, blah, blah, blah

The Oline is finally coming together, so it makes the read option work like a charm.  Part of the read option is "the read".  Are LB's closing down on the RB?

If so, the QB has an opening and vice versa.

Cam will be exposed to tackles, it is up to him to "learn" how to slide when appropriate or get out of bounds.

These are the small things that will make or break Cam, just like in the passing game.  Throwing the ball away occasionally rather than taking sacks.

But at least the patchwork Oline seems to be coming together at the right time to at least give us the chance to make the O work.  Without them, there is nothing to read in the read option, no chance to find receivers and it all breaks down.

This offense is deadly with Cam running it, as long as the Oline can do their job

I rather mold Cam into a Rodgers like player. While Aaron is dangerous in the pocket, he is even more dangerous extending plays while still keeping his eyes down the field. I have that Cam has been doing this a lot this season. He is a dangerous player in and out of the pocket. The scary part is that he can get better.
