Report: Buccaneers leaning toward Marcus Mariota with No. 1 pick

First things first: The 2015 NFL Draft is 76 days away. A lot will change in that time, starting with next weekend's combine. After that, there will be pro days and individual workouts, all in an effort to determine when and if a player should be drafted.

The Buccaneers have the No. 1 pick, and by releasing Josh McCown this week, they made it clear that they will be in the market for a quarterback (CBSSports.com's Will Brinson wrote about just that Thursday.) The top two candidates are Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Florida State's Jameis Winston. And according to BleacherReport.com's Jason Cole, Mariota is the early favorite to end up in Tampa.

"According to the sources I have talked to, at this point in time, the Bucs are leaning towards taking Marcus Mariota because they believe he is the safer option," Cole said Friday, adding one pretty important caveat.

If Mariota is taken first, I could see a slippery slope for Winston. Teams drafting later in the first will not be in need of a quarterback. In all honesty, if I were the Bills or another QB needy team, I would bank on waiting to take Winston in the second. While they say he is the most "pro-ready" QB to go, the last time we heard that Jimmy Clausen became our quarterback. His decision making is slow and he is prone to making poor reads. That in itself says to me he is going to have to adjust to the speed of the game which likely means a lot of losses if he is thrown out there his first season.

Hold off, draft an impact player on the defensive line, and hope he falls to at least the cut off line for the playoff teams.

    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
    • At least we have Mike Kay and his little buddy sidekick whoever to put you to sleep when suffering from insomnia. They're all useless unfortunately.
