How is it that we never have enough cap space?

Cowboys last season

So were gonna act like the last 3 SB winners didn't have big acquisitions through free agency?

And before people start bringing up Hurney, when he was here did we EVER acquire a big name FA?

Wahle, Kemoeatu, Keyshawn, Reggie White, to name a few.

Plus to be clear, neither free agency nor the salary cap has been around forever.

And yes, Hurney is the answer to the question of why. He spent right up to the cap limit pretty much from the time he got here. Every offseason in his tenure, time had to be spent making emergency moves just to clear enough space to sign and draft.

After the lockout though, that was when he really went wild. We got several crazy contracts for a bunch of existing players. Those poorly conceived contracts (paired with poor drafting) put us in a hole that we're still trying to get out of.

The good news is that the cap situation has been steadily improving since Gettleman got here. Plus we're now drafting well and building a foundation that we can work with and building around young players.

We knew a long time ago that it was going to take a while to fix the damage that Hurney did, but it's happening. And even in the midst of those issues, the team is still winning more consistently than in years past.

We're not all the way out of the woods yet, but there's plenty of reason for optimism.

I mean, ownership is part of the problem, but exactly in the opposite way the OP is thinking.

Richardson's hurt pride at being called "cheap" during the lost season and the subsequent lockout were a major factor in the ridiculous "loyalty" contracts that followed and put us in cap hell.

Hurney made plenty of major errors but he was a lot of times just the Fall Guy.

Not sure how much JR involves himself with approving or reviewing contracts. Does he totally leave it up to the GM or does he get involved?

We don't know...but don't let that stop you from making up poo to fit your biases.

And they are losing a handful of starters from last year, or you didn't notice that?

Think of it like this;

You get a credit card and it has a $2,000 limit. You max that card out and transfer the balance no interest to another card with a $3,000 limit. You do the same thing again and transfer the balance to a card with a $5,000 limit. Well, the same thing happens once again and you transfer the balance to a card with a $10,000 limit and eventually you can't even afford the minimum payments.

That's what teams do when they restructure or continue to pursue overpriced talent (this isn't a FA vs. Draft debate, just using this argument for the sake of this analogy). Eventually, you WILL have to pay the piper.

You see, there are people here that genuinely believe cap hell is a myth. These people are what we lovingly refer to as "functionally retarded".

What happens when you get to this point is when you start to see teams purge rosters. The Panthers under Marty Hurney had a maxed out card with a $125,000,000 limit and could no longer afford the minimum payments. That's what happens when you give $50,000,000 contracts to guys like James Anderson and have to keep paying them for four years after they're gone. It's not just the awful contracts (that were often historically bad), it's the restructures that make it so the player haunts you for YEARS after they've left your organization.

Pie'd because you actually answered the op's question instead of replying with a douchenozzle sarcastic response, unlike other huddlers.

Some questions are deserving of the douchenozzle.

You've heard the saying that there's no such thing as a stupid question?

Wrong.

I just read about the Dolphins, they didn't have a lot of cap space this off season but their owners forked over a lot of guaranteed money for the Suh deal.

So for those saying JR has no involvement......

I also remember reading about Brady taking a  pay cut but getting more guaranteed money, the thing is guaranteed money come straight from the owners pocket.

so if we really wanted to we can go after some of these receivers that would actually help our team instead of being a gap fill, they just have to fork over some of that guaranteed money.
