Could Melvin White make the transition to Safety?

WOW!!

I am never a big fan of position changes because knowledge of the position slows you down if it is conflicted or weak.  A S needs to be instinctive.  A hesitation or misstep is critical in the NFL.  If he understands the position and the nuances of the position, then maybe, but his value at CB as depth is significant.  There is nothing wrong with finding a SS late in the draft-a person who understands the position.  They are not so hard to find that you have to create one.

In fact, Jones has more tools than White to play SS. He can be a thumper, has better size, and better speed.  He even plays S, and that is not enough to supplant the slow Harper.  I am sure the coaches have considered several scenarios, but I truly believe that White's best fit for us is as a special teamer and solid reserve (dime) cb.

Yes and he should, been saying it for a while. He actually played it in college as a junior at ULL and was All-Sun Belt honorable. Think he has the ability to play either safety spot to push Tre B. and Roman Harper for playing time.

why do you think Colin Jones was unable to supplant Harper last season?

I called for this move last year when we were in need at safety. He played safety in college and has always been a hard hitter, I really think he has the frame to be a safety, and he has enough cover skills to make the move, but the transition needs to start now so he can start learning a new position.

I literally have no idea.  I know this (and it may have nothing to do with anything) that Harper was a leader on the field in an otherwise young secondary.  He supported Rivera when those who questioned him were waived.  Rivera may have thought to supplant Harper would turn a team leader against him and risk losing the locker room--or maybe Jones was not as good.  I have wondered myself, Bandu.

yeah i share the same sentiments regarding Riveras decision to start Harper.however I hope Jones starts at SS this upcoming season and talent supersedes fear and loyalty.

He lacks the closing speed for fs. That's why he struggles covering deep.

He would be awesome in a zone cover rolled to his side as he is very physical. The only problem is that that requires a shut down guy on the other side. Something we do not have.

Thinking about it, his skillset should work well in the red zone.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
