Round 1 - Carolina Panthers Select Shaq Thompson

While I sorta like the pick, what ever happened to BPA?

With OT and WR being the most pressing need and Perriman being the highest rated available, why wasn't he drafted?

"Highest rated available" on the NFLN or ESPN big board mean a whole heaping pile of jackshit.  The only board the Panthers care about is Gettleman's board.

I'm just curious where we play him. We play a 4-3 base, but we only actually put 3 LBs on the field on a little over 30% of defensive snaps last year. I don't see taking snaps away from Luke or TD to get him on the field, so he's either going to have to straight up play SS or he's going to have to play in some sort of joker role to see a decent amount of snaps.

Or, we could stay in base more because of his versatility. I'm excited to see how we use him.

Gettleman's BPA > Mayock's BPA

Scouts Inc. had Perriman with a 90 Grade and the 20th overall player. Meanwhile Shaq Thompson is graded 78 and 69th overall.

There was 4 other OLB graded higher than Shaq who were still available.

Simple. in base 4-3, Shaq plays OLB. when we go to Nickel, slide Shaq back to SS and take Harper off the field.

Placeholder for the official thread. Adding the possibilities to make things easier.

Great call Jeremy.  It's no wonder we submitted the pick within a few minutes after we were on the clock.

Going off this list, it was a very easy call.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
