Top 3 Offensive Targets In Round 2

Now that Gettleman has taken his BPA in round one of the NFL Draft, I look for him to address the needs of the offense in round 2. I don't see him choosing a defensive player, although that is possible.

Should the Panthers go offense, here are the top targets in round two that may be available when the Panthers select. Unfortunately, I don't see Devin Smith dropping to the Panthers or else he would be the top choice.

Devin Funchess - WR - Michigan

Roughly the same size as Kelvin Benjamin, Funchess would help create immediate mismatches to opposing defenses. Not many teams are built to play against such size at the receiver position.

Jaelen Strong - WR - Arizona State

Solid number 2 possession receiver in the mold of Mushin Muhammad. Definite round 2 talent who the Panthers has listed as a first rounder at one point in time. Good value in the late second round.

Jake Fisher - OT - Oregon

Many proclaimed Fisher to be a first round tackle, but that was silly talk. He is, however, a solid second round prospect. He would immediately compete at that left tackle position. Having played in a pro system with a mobile QB puts him on a fast track to getting playing time.

I'm actually all aboard the Funchess train...guy could be as good as a first round WR talent. What a mismatch covering KB and Funchess would be. I went back to see what they said about his slow 40, apparently he had a toe injury which when he healed allowed him to run a 4.48 at his pro day. This could be the guy and I'm excited.

    • One thing I didn’t consider is how thin this draft is at quarterback. That’s going to drive up the market for backups and borderline starters like Willis, Jones, and Jameis Winston. Because of that, we’ll most likely be priced out of the market for this tier of backup.
    • We've already beat the #1 seed twice, why not one more? (Packers and Rams were both #1 seed at the time we played)
    • My determination has come down to this. Based on recent QB history, has Bryce's improvement warranted 50m per season? Lamar is the only original team QB to play on his 5th year. The others took major deals at the end of the 3rd, before or just after the option was signed. Chances are, we're getting asked for the same.  I haven't rooted for Bryce to fail. I've rooted for him to succeed so big that them signing that extension would give me no worries about our future at QB at all. We haven't seen that level of play consistently that this year. We haven't seen it in the past 6 games.  We're about to be at a threshold with Bryce and I worry about what this front office will do. We have a history of bad decision making and Morgan has been part of that group making those decisions. I don't want Carolina in the same boat Arizona and Miami are right now. It has nothing to with being right. It has to do with wanting to win for more than a single season. We've never had back to back winning seasons. Faith in their abilities is not warranted at this point.
