So how does retirement work in the NFL? If the player later decides to return, if his contract still has time on it, does that team retain his rights? Is there any reinstatement from retirement in the league?

They aren't a dumpster fire because 1 player retired early. They're a dumpster fire because 4 did. Somewhere else in this thread someone identified just how much they've lost and now add a punter. At least the punter was a deal they made and not something that hit them unexpectedly.
