A significant part of the Panthers success can be attributed to...

That is true, plus Gettleman might even go for another big guy in the draft to play receiver or TE.  We can afford to draft another big guy with upside midway through the draft with these three guys as our starters.  We dont have a lot of holes right now.

Add in that Gettleman prefers to fill needs via free agency so he can draft BPA.

Why is it almost a 4 letter word when anybody mentions ways in which to improve a unit that still ranks amongst the league's worst when it comes to talent and production, the WR core?

I am an FSU grad. Love Benji. Thought he was absolutely the right choice and had a great year as a rookie. He is also coming off an ACL injury where he missed the entire season. I know it is not something some may want to discuss...but there is a chance that KB does not come back the same. There is a chance that he develops injury problems for the rest of his career. And while he did have a great rookie season...less keep in perspective he was the 3rd most targeted WR on a team depleted of any other options last year. We MAY not talking about prime Calvin Johnson here.

At some point, the many high draft picks that we spent on the DLine needs to step up. Especially since so many want to give new contracts to all of them. So we are going to give all the DL contracts AND draft more pass rushers too AND sign Mario Williams?

For once, I would like for the Panthers front office to give Newton 1/10 the help that the:

Jaguars gave to Bortles

Raiders gave to Carr

Dolphins gave to Tannehill

Bengals gave to Dalton

And maybe 1/20 the help that the:

Colts gave to Luck

Lions gave to Stafford

Falcons gave to Ryan

Bears gave to Cutler

Just once, pretty please. Can we go into a season without a Punt Return Specialist as the No. 1 or a late first round rookie?

Just once...please???

I love the idea of getting a really good young tight end to work with Olsen.

It reminds me of what the Patriots had with Gronkowski and Hernandez (before Hernandez went psycho).

KB/Funchess/Ginn

Olsen/6'5" rookie TE (which will be available) Not a bad line-up

Oh yeah. Let's take roster building lessons from some of the worst teams in the league. Great idea!

LOL.  I was about to say the same thing.  Apart from the Bengals, none of those teams have been any good this year.  None are in the playoffs except Cinnci, and they've never won a playoff game under Dalton if memory serves correctly.

You know, reading comprehension is really fundamental.

Ensuring that a Return Specialist, a rookie, or an undrafted second year player is not your team's No. 1 WR is not "taking roster building lessons" from teams. And even if we did accept that premise, I qualified the statement with my reference to "1/10" and "1/20."

Beyond that there are reasons why I specially chose those QBs: Most are QBs drafted at or after Newton, or have been in the league for a similar number of years.

I could have gone with the playoff QBs of Rodgers, Manning, Big Ben, Wilson, and Smith. Maybe even Bridgewater as they brought in Mike Wallace (and drafted Diggs but not until the 4th round). All teams that since the arrival of those QBs their Front Office has gone out and ensured there was a certain level of talent associated with the WR core.

And Palmer stepped into one of the league's best WR core in 2013.

Happy?

Actually I think the bigger issue preventing that is that a Benjamin-Funchess combo with Ginn as a number three looks pretty good right now.

Sure KB had the ACL. But...he was not a speed guy anywho. He will have had a full year to rehab. There is absolutely no reason to worry about there being a drop off in his production. Teamed with the growth that Devin has shown, and should show up even better with a full year of off-season seasoning. Yeah, I don't see the need to bring in ANY WRs this off season.

Unless we can bring in a speed guy on a very reasonable contract. Which, let's be honest. The chances are slim that you can sign one of those type WRs on a reasonable deal.

I see us possibly drafting a speed guy with reliable hands to replace ginn. Otherwise I think it's gonna be heavy defense again.

This truly could be a reasonable conclusion. I defiantly see us going heavy on the D side this spring. We absolutely owe it to Kelvin and Devin to let them show us what they can do next year. So adding a WR in the Ginn Jr. mold would be, IMO, the only addition we make at WR. Or Offense is pretty well set. Damm that felt good to say.

I will add, that bringing in a speedy vet WR may, I say MAY, be a possibility. I say that with the success we are showing, maybe a vet without a ring will say to his agent. "If we can get a decent deal out of Gman, let's do it". Stranger things have happened. I mean look at my wife. That she is still with me after umphy years is the definition of strange things.

We already have a number one wide receiver who's not a return specialist, a rookie or an undrafted second year player.  He just happens to be on injured reserve, but he'll be back next year.

When he comes back, he'll be paired with a number two receiver who was a second round pick with a first round value and has been coming along very nicely.

Meanwhile, of the eight teams you chose as your examples, five have losing records and two went .500.  The only team you chose that had a winning record has also never won a playoff game with their current QB/Coach.

Top it all off with the fact that we have a GM who's taken the team from inconsistency and mediocrity and built, in three years, a roster that's a serious Super Bowl contender.  On the flipside, two of your example teams just fired their GMs and two others strongly considered it (probably should have).

And seriously, Mike Wallace?

I think I'll stick with Gettleman's decision making and roster building, thanks.

    • Baseball is waqaayy better suited to statistical analysis than football. If a hitter hits a home run, it's pretty much his own effort though the point goes to the team as a whole. For a team to score a touchdown (let's say via pass) the center has to make a good snap, he and the rest of the line have to block well enough to keep the defense from getting to the quarterback, the quarterback has to throw a good pass, the receiver has to run the correct route and catch the ball, the other potential targets have to effectively play their roles, and so on and so on and so on...  Any single one of those things going wrong can short circuit the whole thing, and even if it's all done right the defense might still stop it. Individual stats just don't paint a complete picture. There are too many variables. To get an accurate picture that way requires looking at things from several different angles, something most folks are either ill equipped or unwilling to do. I don't bother with all that. I just watch the game and go by what I know.
    • Bryce logic is just The Golden Calf of Bristol logic boss.  It’s the same Skip Bayless argument  doesn’t matter he isn’t very good.   Doesn’t matter he is why they are so often down.   Doesn’t matter he doesn’t really generate offense.  We got some really odd ball wins and there are some are some random late plays…it’s just a repackaged Tebowmania argument.  But more bland.  It’s a run game and D carrying the QB…..and wanting to over credit the QB
