Opinions: need a stout vet on other side of Ealy

Options off the top of my head for the vet role..

CJ coming back, Chris Long, Mario Williams, JPP (though, the whole hand thing)

 

A Malik Jackson or someone similar would be too costly IMO.  An Adrian Clayborn type signing might be an option to give us a solid rotation guy but nothing exciting.

Kony's best position in my opinion is at LE so what we need is a guy that excels at RE.

I really like William Hayes from the Rams but my main concern is that he mostly played as a LE last year. If we think he can be a good RE then he's the guy I would most like to bring in with a contract around 2/$8-10M.

Coples is a RE and we definitely have interest in him as shown by his visit, but it appears we are likely thinking of him as a DT.

Robert Ayers can play both ends and he would be a very good pickup.

Derrick Shelby is a younger, 27, RE and he played well after filling in for Cam Wake when he went down. He could be a very good signing.

JPP is strictly a RE, but there is that whole hand thing and he is not going to be cheap.

Chris Long and Mario Williams are pretty much exclusively LEs and would cost way more than they are worth.

The absolute perfect RE for us is available but I'm not even going to mention his name.

I will say, yes, we need another Vet DE... who that is...yeah...no clue =P

In Gettleman we trust!  It would be nice to find someone who'se had some success who can help educate the young guys in some tricks of the trade.

If history has taught us anything, he'll let the feeding frenzy play out a few weeks before bringing in a solid, high character player at a bargain price. Just wondering, can Allen un-retire at a please-get-me-a-SB-ring price?

And yes, our own young guys are getting that "Big Money".

I think he does "open the pocketbook" this year, but only in a relative sense compared to his first 3 years. Gettleman shelling out $5-6M/year to a DE is not out of the question in my opinion. No way he goes after the big name guys, but a mid-tier DE(or maybe Weddle) is definitely a possibility this year.

Pretty much.  Anyone expecting a $10 million/year player is delirious.  As far as Weddle goes, I think he could definitely be a target.  Interested to see how it shakes out.

Weddle would be a bit out of character for Gettleman and would come with a fairly hefty price tag($7-8M), but I can see Ron lobbying hard for him and Gettleman capitulating.

      Im not firm on many things football, but this statement or belief or strategy I am 100% for. Full Offseason the goal is to make the playoffs. Week 1, 1000% I want to win. Weeks 2-10,  1000% I want to win. Until the math stats 0.000000000% chance at NO playoffs, I want to win. *Once* there's no chance at the playoffs, I want to 100% lose every game until the end. You are still loser at 2-15 or 5-12, I want to never lose like this again. I want the best value for losing and suffering. Again the only goal is playoffs. Once in the playoffs anything can happen, I want to win the whole dam show. If you happen to lose in the first round, that's perfectly fine and lets work hard this upcoming off-season to get another chance to make them.  This is the ONLY way to play in the NFL. Anyone not understanding this method of strategy, please call your doctor for a visit...

      Purdy's good but at the end of the day you're paying first class money for a business class seat.  It's a big problem with the salary cap.  QBs take most of it whether they are Pat Mahomes or not.

      Purdy saved the 49ers from that three 1st picks for Trey Lance. People forget that. People also forget he should have MVP votes for the 23 season. He's been any where from the 8th(his best/23) to 14th ranked QB, he's legit and guys around top 10 get paid as QBs.....guys in 28th get paid too, he's 4x the QB Trevor Lawrence is and better than BY by miles as well...even without CMC, Samuel(whos a RB playing WE), and half the OL.    *BUT*    You non-believers missed this ultra important mistake that honestly made me reconsider all the praise I gave him. https://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/49ers-qb-brock-purdy-throws-blind-40-percent   That's is damming to my case and reset my thinking of his.
