RG3 in Carolina?

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and talk about how this wouldn't be so bad...

RG3's capabilities and athleticism could work and work well here. Except for the size difference, there are some similarities between him and Cam. Beyond durability, you've got a good mobile QB with a good arm and a good head on his shoulders.

The problem, as mentioned before, is that he wasn't a team player in Washington and is locker room poison. In his defense, we are talking about the Redskins here. This is a team that has been such a dumpster fire since Dan Snyder took over that even a second coming of Joe Gibbs couldn't lift them up. They've burned through coaches and never have they developed a team identity (or at least a positive one). In addition, it has been shown that coaches there would throw RG3 into the fire to save their own careers with little regards to his development. Take RG3 away from that team, put him on the bench to learn the pro game and provide him with an excellent environment and veteran leadership and you might just have a worldbeater in the making.

Okay, now that that has been said...

It's a great idea and he is redeemable, but you can't take every stray home from the dog pound, no matter how nice they might look sleeping on your couch. We don't have room for him and there's no way we can afford to feed him. We've already got a AKC prize winning dog to lead the pack, a good old dog to sleep on the couch and guard the property, and a good all around dog to run around in the back yard playing catch and keeping the kids busy.

We don't have room for another one, don't need one and we sure have no reason to get rid of any of the ones we have to make room.

But you send him to the Dawg Pound up in Cleveland, where they need someone like him, have a good new coach and someone to learn from... well, you just might be on to something there.

It's an interesting thought experiment.

From his perspective, he needs a reset.  A couple of years backing up someone to allow his body and mind to fully recover.  Washington destroyed him.  He had a great rookie year, but fell apart because he can't avoid the hits.  He's just a smaller framed guy.  RG3 just needs a place to lay low and work on his craft, and Carolina would be a great fit because of the development of Cam Newton.  He could probably pick up a lot here to help turn his career around and have a much better 2nd half.

But it would require him to understand he's a back up.  Understand that he's only an emergency guy.  That his job is to get himself better before he thinks he can sniff clean up hand offs.  But with Anderson and Webb already here, already having a great QB room with Cam, and RG3's reputation as a cancer...yeah, I just don't think it happens.

Fun experiment, but it fails where the rubber meets the road.  RG3 hasn't shown the humility to even sniff our locker room.  Can you imagine what our vet leaders would do to him?  Cam, Kalil, Olsen, TD, Luke, Short, Norman...not to mention Turner and Norwell...those guys respect what we've created and appreciate what we have.  He would be the ultimate fish out of water here...

A summer in our locker room would definitely teach him some humility (or kill him). He actually would be a decent fit (physically) at Carolina, and would be a long term fix at backup QB. Anderson is not getting any younger. If RG3 could curb his delusions of grandeur and accept that he is a second string lifer, he could make a damn good backup wherever he lands.

A former Redskins GM says RG3 would be a great fit in Carolina, backing up Cam Newton.

Of course, the Panthers already have Derek Anderson and Joe Webb... both arguably better QBs than Bob the Third.

Thoughts like this are part of the reason Casserly is a former GM.

    • Only thing I really see it doing is possibly making Tepper listen if a different play caller can't run the offense because of limitations. New hire, someone who hasn't been watching Bryce for the past 3 years up close may be able to talk some sense if he sees that he isn't able to get the job done.
