A Funchess Reminder

Last year Funchess was about as green as a NFL rookie can be. Not much football experience under his belt.

We saw him grow from week to week and by the end of the season he was a solid piece of the puzzle.

Fast forward to September when he has a full season, post season, another entire offseason under his belt.

Thia year,I suspect Devin will be as big of a receiving threat as KB was his rookie year.

That is all.

He was green coming in and he missed a lot of invaluable reps in camp with hamstring issues.

Expecting a breakout year for Funchess.

Could be Cam's year if the WR group lives up to potential and avoids injury.

Hopefully with the big WR tandem Shula will install a few more quick hitters to alleviate some of the QB pressure.

I like Funchess, but we have a lot of WR that are the same size, speed and skill set.  We needed a true route runner with speed--i.e.. Shepard.  We needed DLine help and CB/S help and we got it.  But we totally ignored the fact that Denver bottled up our WR and they got no separation, hence exposing our second weakness--the Oline.  We did not address either.  Ginn is gone after this year and we have no replacement.

Yup. And I don't get why everyone is so quick to get rid of Philly. That sumbitch is slowly becoming a pretty good WR.

takes a little while to get use to those missiles Cam throws.

And Philly figured out how to beat the dropsies between preseason and regular season.

The competition between receivers should be interesting.  I hope that our coaches allow evolution to take its course and don't come in with preconceived notions.

YUP, counting the 2 UDFAs we'll be signing, we have  11 WRs on the roster:

Benjamin, Kelvin
Bersin, Brenton
Brown, Philly
Byrd, Damiere
Funchess, Devin
Ginn, Jr., Ted
Hamilton, Cobi
Hill, Stephen

Norwood, Kevin

Garrett, Keyarris
Stoshak, Jenson

it is of my opinion that our will was broken in SB50 when Philly was thrown out of the game. He was our only movable piece on offense and he excels at that roll.

    • Cooter, Kurb, others have passed on to glory….  Praise be.
    • Oh good for them! Hope this is the start of a long happy time in their lives here.
    • There was no reason to believe in either Cam or Jake as a top tier elite QB before those seasons either. Cam was an "athletic" QB in most people's minds and his passing skills were open for debate. And there was a bit to that as he was still trying to get that massive power in his arm tamed to be able to put some touch on his passes. And then, he did it. Missiles became bombs, the firing lanes became points of finesse. Cam grew up and leveled up, while still retaining the ability and drive to truck people whenever he wanted. And Jake... no one freaking believed in Jake except Jake himself. He got, and let's be honest with this, one chance in a losing game to make something out of his career. And he rose to the occasion like some kind of mythical hero and continued to do so for the season. He became a true leader for the team, and his gunslinger capabilities rehabbed Moose's career and created Smitty as a force in the league. Smitty went from a barker to a biter. But no one believed in Jake going in. And they trashed him on his way out. Now Bryce... who knows? I've seen some improvement. Maybe he finds his footing. His teammates seem to love and respect him and that means a lot. The game should be moving at his speed now. He has weapons available to him and maybe a defense that doesn't just roll over by the third quarter. And his coach seems to be moving this team in the right direction. Could he do it? It's up to him, if he can find the magic like Jake and Cam did. But don't doubt this, magic is really, really hard to find.
