Selecting the 2016 Panthers Wide Receivers

Philly has not had 2 shoulder surgeries. If you had a shoulder injury you understand why it lingers until surgery.

Cam has simply had good chemistry with Philly. Philly has at least 5 targets in every playoff game IIRC. That says a lot.

KB and Funch are our upside in the WR core. Philly is the closest thing Cam has to a security blanket outside of Olsen and KB. He is cheap and just 24, whats not to like?

KB, Ginn, Funch are locks >> You'd be foolish to cut the play making Ginn brings to the offense/special teams, HE IS our home-run hitter. I mean seriously this shouldn't even be a question, he had 10 TDs, 10!!!

The final two spots IMO I'd like to see what Byrd, and HiIl offer as i believe both have more upside than Philly (Brown).

I think Garrett forces us to keep six receivers. I like Philly Brown, but I think his ceiling is what we saw, IMO I didn't see a jump from his rookie year to this past year in an expanded role, it was a lot of the same which was fine but I wasn't of the mindset he has more to offer.

To open that 6th receiver spot, I could see Joe Webb being cut, he brings nothing to the receiver group, and yea special team is a plus fro him, but I don't think that ALONE warrants a spot with the improvement in talent at receiver.

I believe that right now it looks like this: KB, Funchess, Ginn, Brown, Garrett

Honorable mention: Byrd

After training camp and preseason, it could be changed. If Byrd shows consistency with his hands, I could see someone being bumped out. I see Ginn being that guy. Getts is all about the future. Depending on how they feel about Brown/Byrd, this could be the lineup before the season.

KB, Funchess, Brown, Garrett, Byrd

Ok not two surgeries but he has missed Valuable playing time because of the same shoulder injury two years in a row. They do have good chemistry but he also has somewhat suspect hands if you watched his catches last year they were 80% body catches that took him to ground allowing a minimal yac. Last season I saw a major improvement in those body catches but still see overall minimal production however you slice it. If Byrd offers similar output but the (John brown) big play affect it puts us in a better position to win long term and current day. From what I say Cotchery was the real security blanket, Brown was an option that played out of neccesity where he preformed decent and above average in two playoff games last year. I like a Brown a lot nothing not to like but Im hoping we field the best team possible whoever that my be.

Would't it better to categorize them by WR postition (X, Z, slot) rather than body type? Size/speed can be a proxy for position but it doesn't always work that way. KB plays almost exclusively X, Ginn played X last year, Philly plays mainly Z, Funch  apparently can play all three but really only played X and slot last year, not sure about the rest.

KB/Funch/Ginn - those three are locks IMO

The last two spots are anyone's guess, but despite my middling opinion of Philly, I suspect he has an inside track to one of those spots but he won't survive another camp and preseason like he had last year.  If he shows hands of stone again, he'll be sent packing especially if the talk about Byrd is legit.  I don't think that both Philly and Byrd make the roster - it'll be one or the other IMO.  Philly's game experience gives him an edge, but Byrd's speed can't be taught and it'd be nice to have another legit burner on the roster in case something happened to Ginn.  Philly is NOT that fast by NFL WR standards; stop typing.

My guess for the last two spots is Philly and Garrett.  Garrett gets the nod over the rest due to his hands and higher upside than Bersin.  We just can't afford to carry Hill.  We have enough WRs with hot/cold hands already.

*I know Garrett and Byrd seem like the early faves and will have their summer bandwagons but I'd like to see what we're dealing with before getting excited.  Hill needs to not be injured and show something.  For now:

KB

Funch

Ginn

Brown

Norwood (It may not mean much but he is the only option we've technically invested a draft pick on)

You are underplaying Brown's postseason production.

He had the biggest passing play in the postseason that blew the doors open on the Cards and sent us to the SB.

He made the play that setup our only TD in the superbowl.

    • There always has been collusion, as long as I have been a fan. It sure looks like they tweaked outcomes too. Good luck proving it. As much as I despise a lot of the ownership I'm still not sure what would happen if it was forced to change.
    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
