Saints fans gnashing of the teeth

Captain Morgan

Their fan board is panicked over their O Line.  Yes, Terron Armstead is very good, but everyone else is not starter material in their view, especially both guards.

So when it was announced the the Packers were shopping All Pro guard Josh Sitton, their board went nuts, coming up with all kinds of trade scenarios to get him.  Of course, no one wanted to trade for him, and he was released.

Now the Saints fans were really giddy with excitement on obtaining him...except he first went to Chicago and signed there without even visiting the Saints.

This really confused the aints, who are twisting in the wind trying to determine how to resign the old franchise QB or just let him play this year and start a complete rebuild.

Many of their fans were like "we couldn't even trade a 7th for an all pro guard???"

The answer is, no they couldn't.

On page 21 of their thread on Sitton, someone asked that question, and it was answered by one of their own.

"$6M cap hit. We'd have to make the room first, because it factors in immediately. We didn't have the space, and the time it would take to get Drew's contract extended, we'd miss out. "

See, by trading even a 7th, Saints would have had to pick up the 6 mill cap hit.  They couldn't.  With Drew Brees counting 30 mill against their cap, 2.1 million.  They could probably make some quick cuts to another million or 2 in space, but no where near 6 mill.

So they couldn't even trade.  And Chicago snapped him up.

so a lesson learned, or in their words...

Also, everyone knew he'd be released. So, why waste a draft pick when you can set the terms of cash and cap?

Also, we really have to ask why he was being released. Was Thompson really that upset at an extension contract negotiation that he'd pull a Lombardi?
Have some money on hand in case this happens......

One more lesson to add to the wisdom book.

People on the outside look in at Gettleman thinking he's crazy but they don't realize that we signed two cornerstone pieces of our team for dirt cheap, finds the bargain bin steals, and continues to successfully draft. Dude is a genius.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
