Bucky Brooks: Howard most complete TE in 10 years

For those of you poo-pooing the thought of O.J. Howard being our pick, If Bucky Brooks' analysis is correct, then it's possible. Howard is a wildcard that everyone wants, but it will come down to who has the faith and vision to pull the trigger.

Bucky believes Howard is a star in the making. The complete skill set is there!

 

"Howard is the most complete tight end prospect to enter the league in the past decade. Now, I know that's quite a statement with the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Travis Kelceand Jordan Reed sparking a revolution at the position, but they didn't enter the league with polished games that led evaluators to believe they were "solar system" players at the position.

"Howard sports a refined game that will prompt NFL play-callers to build game plans and passing games around his talents...Howard has the potential to control games with his mere presence on the field...it's rare to find tight ends who can blow past linebackers and safeties, have the balance and body control to separate from defenders on short and intermediate routes, and the strength, power, technique and desire to block defensive ends and edge defenders in the running game. That's why scouts are touting Howard as one of the 'must-have' players in the 2017 class."

And Brooks ain't the only one throwing superlatives Howard's way. 

"He's special. He has the tools to be a dominant player from the first time that he steps into the building. He's big, fast and athletic. He can catch the pill, and he's learned how to block. I love the kid!" -- AFC head coach.

"He's a 'right now' player. He's an explosive athlete with good hands and route-running ability. Plus, he's improved a lot as a blocker. ... He's about as complete as they come at that position." -- AFC scout

"He's a man among boys at his position. He was head and shoulders above everyone at the Senior Bowl."-- AFC college scouting director

So, there you have it!  Some of you may look at Howard as an afterthought, but I doubt that Dave Gettleman is being so simplistic in reference to Howard. 

Last offseason, Mike Shula was campaigning for another TE, and it wasn't just to spell Greg Olsen, but to complement him and the rest of the offense. Greg Olsen is already trouble for opposing defenses. Howard, whose pro comp is Olsen, would be double the trouble. With all the talk of an offensive evolution, why not let the evolution that is the modern TE---the leader of the 2017 draft, O.J. Howard---be a focal point?

Would make perfect sense if we got him in a trade down with a team like the browns, colts, eagles (a team with a mid round first pick ). That way we could get him and pick up another 2nd rounder for a total of 3 2nd rounders, which is a lot of ammo to move back into the first to get another premier talent . Or use a couple of the 2nd to trade up and have two 2nds in the top 10 of that round .

I will be honest. I'm watching more tape on him, and I can't believe how underutilized he is.

I'm changing my opinion. I'd rather take Howard over a DE in this draft hands-down based on immediate impact. He will be a good TE in the league, and you can't pass on that. I've never seen a guy so under-used in my life.

It would immediately be an offense like the Shockey and Olsen days, AND we can snag a solid RB in the later rounds.

If I'm being honest, you can find a solid immediate starter at RB in the later rounds, but there's no one more complete than OJ Howard at TE right now. I can see it happening, and I will not be complaining.

Having another pass catching TE on the field will help Cam , the oline , the other WR, and Greg . You could argue hes the one pick that could improve the team the most  , well maybe outside of Myles Garrett but that's too unrealistic. The only other comparison is if Fournette ends up being Bo Jackson 2.0 or if we managed to somehow get Adams and Hooker together.

      For starters, and again I am not sure what his capacity is in the media or how connected he is to the team, but I posted above Al Wallace says he is "absolutely" getting 50+ a year and he deserves it.  I obviously strongly disagree with it but it feels like like season when the team is slow leaking info to gauge the temp.   Secondly nobody on Gods green earth is going to sign an extension making less than he is making now.  Thats just crazy talk.

      No. Physical tools alone aren't enough. There are plenty of examples of draft busts to support that. Aost all of them had the physical tools and that wasn't enough. But Bryce is a perfect example of the opposite. Absolutely elite intangibles aren't enough either. If you simply don't have the physical abilities all the football intelligence and work ethic in the world won't be enough to overcome it. Just look to the sidelines every Sunday. We call those people "coaches".

      As much as I despise Billy B, his philosophy on QBs is how I would approach things if I were a GM. You always keep looking for your next starter.  He has Bledsoe, who got injured and his backup ended up being the GOAT. Even while he had that going, he kept getting his next guy and developing them. When Brady got hurt, Cassel stepped in and went 11-5 and they missed the wild card by dumb luck. Who knows how far they would have gone if they had gotten in. Jimmy Gs career started in NE. There were others, but he always kept looking.  You can't be afraid to keep looking for your next starter, but it looks like we're afraid to look for more than a marginal one. If you're going to offer a $25m contract with incentives, that screams marginal QB. It also screams you're just a transition until we find our guy. After a 10 or 11 win season, he's not accepting that offer. And then you're in a Daniel Jones situation. Do you pay for a year of success and pray it wasn't a one year wonder?  To this point, Bryce has really produced nothing, yet for whatever reason, our FO has not even sniffed at the idea that we need a real QB room with real QBs. Dalton was never starter potential, Plummer was a joke. KP certainly isn't, neither is Grier.  Our approach to the QB room needs to be one of strength not fear. Bring in guys who can compete or who you think can compete. This is THE elite position, in an elite sport, paid premium salary, where production matters. Either you produce or you can lose your job. It's not mean, it's just the reality of the position.  And I'm really just tired of our candy ass approach to it.
