Am I the only one who thinks Ealy thrives in NE?

I think Ealy will have a big year for them. Gettleman follows the same approach as Belichick, pick up guys that had lackluster years with their previous teams and give them a shot at redemption.

Sometimes they pan out, sometimes they don't, and like posters said earlier, Belichick doesn't always hit. He's missed on numerous occasions.

Ealy is also in a contract year, and Bill knows he wants to get that elite DE money. Obviously the Pats won't pay him, but if he can give them any sort of production (I personally think he hits double digit sacks for them), then it's a win win for Bill. Drop a measily 8 spots in the draft and take on 1 year of Ealy's small rookie contract. Could be a very smart move.

From all counts Patriots have always been a 4-3 for a long while.

Actually they have been both. They were a 3-4 two gap defense for a long time but changed to a 4-3 two gap defense the past several years. They changed when they couldnt find the players to play their 3-4 2 gap style.

I know I'm not in the locker room or on the practice field with the team, obviously, but I think the Panthers gave up on Kony Ealy too soon. Just one year ago he was touted as our next great edge rusher, after a sensational Super Bowl 50, and then he has a very lackluster season in 2016 and we dump him. I understand the Panthers get a slight move up from the comp. round in the 3rd to the late 2nd, but we also lose a DE (who does have potential) which we would have to accommodate in the draft regardless of trading Ealy or not...now we will definitely have to use one of our first three picks on an edge rusher and quiet possibly in the 1st round. If there's a pass rusher that we can't pass on at #8, Gettleman would have to pounce.

But just the thought of Belichick and the Patriots seeing something in Ealy would make me second guess trading the kid... a year with Peppers? Who knows how that could've affected his growth... but now we'll have to watch from a far and see how he pans out in New England. I just have a feeling we'll see him go into something pretty special there... best of luck to Kony really... just hope we're not looking back on him like Geno Adkins...

We could have kept him and he had another terrible season. Then we get nothing for him.

Bill is a football genius and the best head coach of this generation hands down.

However, our Head Coach is no slouch in one very particular area, and that's defense. While we did take a step back defensively last year mainly due to inexperience and injury, by the end of the season the defense started to look a lot like the one from the year before with the rookies getting some experience and Ealy relegated to a rotational role.

I don't trust Rivera 100%, but I do trust him when it comes to defense, and it was apparent that Ealy wasn't working like he should have in our scheme. If Rivera blessed the trade, then there is no doubt in my mind that Ealy just wasn't "getting it" and never would in our scheme. Perhaps he does better elsewhere, but Rivera has made a habit of making marginal defensive talent look damn good in his defenses as long as they play their role.

The Patriots Defense has been a base 4-3 since 2011.

Granted the initial depth chart was slated as a 3-4. You can check out the depth chart archives by clicking on the top right corner.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
