Draft profile by PFF:

Name: Corn Elder

School: Miami (FL)

Position fit: Slot cornerback

Stats to know: Missed just four of the 70 solo tackles he attempted in 2016.

What he does best:

  • Outstanding tackler. Finished the 2016 season with 66 solo tackles, tied for eighth among cornerbacks in all of college football, and missed just four.
  • Really impressive in zone coverage. Reads and reacts quickly to force incompletions.
  • Good athlete who possesses the speed to cover receivers downfield.
  • One of the best cornerbacks in the nation when it comes to his work against the run. Gets himself into the right position and secures the tackle more often than not.
  • Great fit as a slot corner in the NFL. Played just 48 snaps there in 2016, but allowed just 0.33 yards per route run.
  • Spent time at both, right and left cornerback, as well as in the slot.

Biggest concern:

  • Not a good fit in man coverage.
  • Prone to be beaten by double moves. Bites too hard on the initial move and is left for dust with the second.
  • Struggles against bigger receivers. Another reason why he is a better fit on the inside at the next level.
  • Not really a playmaker. Had just three interceptions and 13 pass breakups over the past three years.

Player comparison: Captain Munnerlyn, Minnesota Vikings

Like Munnerlyn, Elder’s best fit at the next level is in the slot. Both are solid run defenders who don’t miss many tackles, and it wouldn’t be a shock at all to see Elder have a similar career to him at the next level, particularly if he lands with right team scheme wise.

Bottom line: Elder is a perfect fit for the slot in the NFL given his size and coverage abilities. He has struggled at times on the outside when having to deal with double moves, but really excelled at reading and breaking down the play in front of him. If he lands on the right team, and is played in the slot, he could have a big impact, even as a rookie.

You're just mad because we didn't draft a TE. You might as well come to terms with the fact that this draft is about speed and shiftiness, not big and plodding, the Moten pick notwithstanding.

Its all about context, you don't know football.

Panthers wll be using 2 TE set a lot don't go into hiding when the season rolls around :)

Still could get Cethan Carter or Bucky Hodges, both still available. Gonzalez is too as well, isn't he?

Not to mention there's a certain FA TE I want...

    • I have said if you out even an average QB into the offense we are averaging 25+ points a game. But that will never happen with Bryce under center.
    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
