Voth: Proehl didn't really push receivers

Discussing the Kelvin Benjamin weight issue during an interview with Chris Kroeger on WFNZ, new Panthers.com writer Bill Voth stated that previous Panthers wide receiver coach Ricky Proehl tended to coach as a "teammate/father figure" type of coach and didn't necessarily push his charges as hard as some might expect.

Voth further stated one of the big questions for the upcoming season will be whether new receiver coach Lance Taylor continues that style or becomes more of a drill sergeant.

Surprised? Appalled? Amused?

Not surprised. It works for and against. Ricky seemed like a really good person, but you can't coach everybody with that passive aggressive personality.

My issue with Benjamin is that if he can't push himself to stay in shape, no coach is going to be able to get out of him his full potential.

Agreed. For all of them actually. The coach can push but you also have to be motivated within.

#89 can get Benjamin down to 150 lbs by training camp.

I would love to see Agent 89 as a WR coach.

Would love Jeremy Igo take on this as well.  I really liked Proehl but did seem he got just a little to soft the last few seasons and you could tell with some of these guys like KB and Funchess.  They both have it in them, they look damn good in camp from reports.  But just seem to need help lighting a fire under their azz.

Im still not familiar with the new coach and his personality

He loved Proehl. Not sure if his stance had changed since then but Igo started a thread a year or so ago basically saying to enjoy Proehl while you can because he would be scooped up by another team for bigger and better things soon. I forget the specifics but he definitely thought Proehl was top notch at his job at that time.

Edit** *didn't realize he responded.

When did Cotchery become one of our WR coaches

Good chance you will hear about Moose showing up as a part time WR coach a bit this year also.

Moose and Smitty used to stay after practice for a competition catching balls from a machine until their fingers bleed trying to see who would drop the first ball. Only good thing will come from him being there if he decides to do it.

He was definitely a player friendly coach. Nothing wrong with that and can be very effective. Tony Dungy comes to mind in his manner on the field.
In the end his guys did not develop as well as the team would like. But, it should be noted, the same was the case in Tampa Bay when Shula was OC. Difficult for a receiver to excel under Shula.

So you don't think Ginn excelled as a receiver compared to other places. Doesn't Benjamin hold the rookie record for a Panther receiver. How many 1000 yard seasons did Olsen have before coming here?
Oh and are you really going to compare passing in 2000 to what we see in 2017. The passing game has evolved immensely in the past 17 years and so has the game. How many TE screens did he run in Tampa? Many four wide sets? No huddle? We run them all under Shula.
If Shula does a good job this year it would be great if you would evolve your attitude toward him. If he sucks he will be gone and I will give my support to the next coordinator just like I have for Shula. And you can move on and heal.

I think Rivera hires coaches like Proehl, which is a flaw of Rivera's in my opinion. Not a huge deal, but I feel Cam would benefit from having a QB coach who pushes him harder than Dorsey, and the whole offense would benefit more from having an OC who gets pissed at players when they f*ck up and makes sure they don't do it again. Shula seems afraid of doing that. Never once have I seen him in a player's face. Lots of screw ups, very little discipline or real consequences for the players screwing up. Rivera's actually decent at it despite being a "player's coach." But considering his family's military background, this isn't surprising. Same on the defensive side, though I think Wilks is a much tougher and stricter coach than McD was. Also with players like Ealy and Boston, I think the coaching has been at least some part of their departures this offseason. Gettleman has to come in and be the guy laying down the law in these two cases. If the coaches had done it more often and earlier maybe these two would've come closer to reaching their potential, and would still be here and DG wouldn't have to be the "parent" here.

That's all for my rant right now...

Maybe he isn't in players faces in a game because he is up in the booth. Do you have any clue what he is saying to the quarterback or to the QB coach.. as for practice or camp, Jeremy would have a better read on it (biased a bit perhaps). I haven't heard much either way. Traditionally offensive coordinators are more cerebral and less fiery but there are clear exceptions to the rule.

Would Taylor be okay with others not putting in as much effort as his star pupil?

I think this speaks a lot... The star pupil on a team of this level often sets not just the bar, but the pace. Maybe Benjamin just needs a taste of someone else being the star pupil to bring that competitive spirit out in him.

Wasn't talking about during games, I've been to camp numerous times since he took over as OC, and had seen coaches get in players' faces during camp. Wilks one of the most. Shula never. Not saying it's good or bad, just an observation of mine. Continue your Shula love p55.

Mccaffery will be a pupil of Skipper though.  They will be in different position groups for the most part
