Gettleman nutthugger checking in. I'm more shocked than anything, but I don't necessarily think we are screwed, this year at least. 

There wasn't much more for Gettleman to do this season. The remaining roster is hashed out by the coaches and then Dave cuts the other guys. Everything that was to be done, was done for the 2017 season. Whatever happens, happens, and the direct results will be what Gettleman put together. The timing of the move is super weird but we either do well in spite of the move, or we crumble and the move looks like Richardson can predict the future. What happens after this season though is what has me more worried. 

Long term this is a head scratcher. We have No GM, No assistant GM, No team President. There is a severe void in leadership for this franchise moving forward. Like Gettleman or not, he was a warm body to man the position and we had an idea of what we would be doing under him. There was vision. It was cold at times, and it was all business, but we had more success in his short tenure then we did with any other GM at the helm. Many people will argue that it was with Hurney's core, and that is true, but if you give me 5 core ingredients and Gordon Ramsey 5 core ingredients, I can pretty much guarantee you that my dish won't be nearly as good as his. Hurney found some tasty poo, he just didn't know how to make it work with all the other ingredients. That's where Gettleman came in, and seemed to break a few eggs in the process. 

Truth be told I am a bit worried. I don't think Gettleman's drafting was as great as many on here seem to, the sheen has definitely come off many of his picks, but he was still able to fill roster spots with talent from UDFA guys and vets that can contribute at team friendly prices. He also didn't overpay for players which is the thing that got us into trouble before he arrived. From the outside looking in, the good outweighed the bad with Gettleman, but we weren't there for the day to day stuff and we don't really know what all happened behind the scenes. Dude could have been a complete dickhead to work with and that wears on anyone. 

So this year, I'm pretty meh about what happens. I think the worst case scenario for the long term success of our franchise would be if we win it all. That would show how short sighted of a move this would be. I still hope we win it all, I always do, but I don't think it will work out too well in the near future if we do. 

So I'm hopeful we get our poo together and find a GM who's even better than Gettleman, but I've got some serious concerns moving forward...

Anyway, what do you guys think?

The Falcons fired the most successful head coach they had had in franchise history and went to the SB 2 years later.  How Cam plays this year is honestly way more important than any other factor out there.  As it is with the other 31 QB's in the league for the most part.

If Cam plays like 2015, we will make the playoffs.  If not, we will be a 7-9ish team.

Well he got us out of "cap hell" and hopefully gave us a decent foundation to work with in the future. I loved his press conferences and his "don't give a poo" attitude. I'm not the one to panic, but reading the reaction threads today makes me think that the apocalypse is upon us. Everyone, please calm your tits and enjoy this animated gif from Airplane!

Like I said, I'm not worried about this year.

Next year it might be rough though.

Man, I love this team... So much so that I tattooed the logo on my leg after the 2010 Clausen debacle... But I cannot drum up anythign more than an 'oh well, we'll see what happens now' attitude. I ap[appreciate what Gettleman did while he was here, but somebody has a good reason why he's unemployed. Might not be a good reason to us, but its a good enough reason the them... 

 

I will not denounce this team, like I did in 2001 when we lost our 5th straight to the 'Skins, and refuse to buy or wear any Panther gear...

 

I will still pay for my SundayTicket, will still be in front of my TV every Sunday and damn sure will still bring my daughter to her 1st game on a MondayNight this November...

 

It is so much easier when you get that its entertainment and it doesnt matter what you do, whether you wash your jersey or not, which way you point your helmet, what jersey you bought... Its out of your hands, enjoy what you can, revel in the good times....

      Serious question:  Why LG and not RG?  There may be something I do not know, but Hunt's contract is huge and he could be let go after this season (post june 1 cut) and it would save the Panthers a ton of money.  Extending him would be paying a G who is in his mid 30s guaranteed money (and I do not see that as a terrible thing).  So if we release him at age 31, we save $19m.  I like him, but at 31, will he be worth the mega contract?   LG Damien Lewis has actually outperformed Hunt and he is a year younger.  He would also save less vs. the cap and leave less in the dead cap pool.  While his current contract expires after the 2027 season, he is a better prospect (IMO) to extend because only 50% of his current contract was guaranteed.  Here are his contract numbers.   Now, getting to Ickey--he could want LT money if he is offered a second contract.  If we pay him LT money to play either G positions, we are likely overpaying.  Secondly, the injury he suffered could be one that limits his productivity.  Ickey was improving, but he was an average LT.  The only way I re-sign Ickey is to have him accept a G contract and make a lot of it incentive based.     I feel like I am missing something, but in my mind, Ickey was always a guard if you consider the fact that he is an average OT and would be a great G.  Is that still the case (injury)?

      Supplemental draft uses picks from next year. So a team were to draft him in the 1st, their upcoming 1st next draft would no longer be available. There have been some notable players that were obtained in the supplemental draft, such as Kosar. It doesn't necessarily happen every year either, and is more on a as needed basis. The gambling trouble is a big red flag for teams, and maybe pushes him down to a 4th? Not sure a team would use a 1st on him.
