Three reasons the Panthers could lose to the 49ers

You're not wrong. Keeping two kickers when one of them is Gano is one of the worst moves and most annoying things in Panthers history. As a GM you have to make tough decisions. If you are unable to do so, you have no business being GM.

Since kids may read this board I can't say how insane this decision truly is.  But you are right.  To be kind, this is MADNESS

Kicker is unlike any other position on the field. It really is an individual sport, most of which is mental.

Teams typically go out of their way to instill confidence in their kicker. For this reason, 1 is only kept.  Should a world beater all pro kicker be able to block everything out and none of that should matter? Sure.

Do the Panthers have one of those or any prayer of one of those this season? Nope.

Most kickers in the NFL are mentally tough enough focus on the task at hand, and if our kickers are not, we should just drop them both since neither are NFL quality.  But I don't believe that's the case.  Gano does not always handle pressure well, but I don't think having competition will have much impact on him at all.  And Butker has not given the impression at all that he can't handle the pressure.

And the reason only one is kept is because that is all that is needed (unless a team feels they need a kickoff specialist).  Ask any coach, or even player, and they will tell you that a guy that can't handle the pressure of competition, no matter the position, has no business in the NFL.

People take a look at the series Newton played in preseason and say "oh, he's fine."

Not so fast...

The kind of rust, soreness, etc that could affect Newton may not show up as much early. But as the game goes on and fatigue starts to factor in, it can become a big deal.

What you have to hope for is the rust and such getting shaken off early and Newton getting his legs under him as the game goes on.

We'll see.

I agree with the mentality that it puts a guy at the starters back shoulder.

I also think that because we drafted one and the other is, as kickers go, decent.   As someone posted last week some teams were interested in one or the other.  Hurney might be holding onto one for a draft pick.  If we end up keeping two for a week or so and end up with a 4-7 draft pick than it might be worth the holdout.

The kicker situation should be decided by Wednesday morning at the absolute latest. I do not want to carry two kickers into San Francisco with the starter looking over his back, especially if the game is tight. In my mind, the choice is simple and Gano has gotta go. Don't hold out waiting to get a pick for either one, that's the wrong way to do business. If he can't get a bag of beans for Gano, cut him and move on so the last kicker standing knows it is his job.

Good point.

We don't know much at all from 2 preseason throws.

Hope for the best.

Here's a good question. If we DO still have two kickers on the roster next Sunday, which one gets the jersey?

Gano to entertain trade calls if he does well. That or because the coaching staff is inept and stupid.

Hurney answered that question yesterday

I would say if we need a fg to win this game we should lose anyway. They have a new coaching staff, new players and some still learning the system. Alot of unknowns for them and we have a great team except for the secondary. No reason we should not win by at least 14 points. Go Panthers, Keep Pounding!!!!
