So Byrd is either going to be thrown straight into the fire or Colin Jones might be starting if Cox is out this week. That worries the hell out of me. I don't doubt Byrd is better than Jones all things being equal, but Byrd has to get up to speed on the playbook and defensive signals and he wasn't in anyone's camp or offseason program this year so he has to get his body ready as well. That could be really tough for him. No amount of training can simulate actual football.

Larsen not practicing is also bad with Kalil looking like he probably will miss one more week.

At least Seymour looked really good replacing Worley.

Does anyone know wtf is wrong with Kalil? We’re being robbed by the Kalil brothers. One has a mysterious injury and the other just sucks.

Rumor is compressed/bulging disc which would explain the prolonged absence rather than a simple strained neck.

Rivera on Jairus Byrd: "Veteran with a lot of experience, a ball hawk. He's exactly what we're looking for in this situation."

Rivera says Panthers wanted a veteran voice to take Colemans place while he's on the shelf, that's what they got in Jairus Byrd....

Rivera said that they had plans for a bigger role for Samuel last week but injury prevented that. "Can't practice on Fri, you can't play."

Ron Rivera on Gillette Stadium playing surface: "Just listening to guys' responses, they weren't happy about playing on that turf."

RR says Jairus Byrd has a real chance to play Sunday. My sense is they signed him to start immediately.

Does Byrd have a chance to start this Sunday? Rivera: Oh yeah.

RR says Panthers went and got a proven safety rather than a young guy b/c of team's good start and opportunity to have a strong season.

Damn julius peppers has a great job

chill all week and come into the game and rack up some tackles and sacks

perfect situation for a vet

If vet rest all week equates 1 to 2sacks a game and nonstop pressure/run stops then he can do this all season. :shades:

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
