Has Worley Regressed?

Worley never really looked good to me, so I don't know about him regressing. Worley is kind of slow, and so you plunk him in a zone and hope for the best. Big cushion and things are easier for him. The problem is when teams go deep and the ball is in the air with every ref watching, he turns into a bull in a China shop. That can be good or bad depending on the skill level of the player. You want to fight for the ball, but you don't want a PI. Worley has low agility, so WRs can frustrate him and turn him around with their agility. On the other hand Worley is strong for his size, and he will knock the poo out of you. He likes to hit. but he won't look pretty out there. He's not a finesse guy.

Not sure he's regressed, I just don't see the improvement that everyone was talking about during camp and preseason. Hopefully he'll be like Funchess and eventually those improvements will click and show on the field but that hasn't happened just yet.

Or Norman.

I was at the game and it stood out to me that he was being targeted by stafford. Make of that what you will.

I remember a couple of occasions when the WR recognized he was 1-on-1 with Worley and started waving at Stafford to get his attention.

One of the biggest problems we have is the expectations we have for players.  Worley was projected (by most sites) to be a 4th-5th rounder.  I thought we reached a bit, but he had the size we like.  Starting in the NFL as a rookie is tough, and it takes time to learn.  THe better athletes can get away with it because they are better athletes.  Worley, however, will have to use his brain as much as a legs if he wants to be successful.

I think he is a career backup, if he can play special teams.  We need another CB, SS, and depth at FS.  Other than that, the secondary is fine.

Worley played a pretty good game yesterday. He was up against a first class passer and a respected receiving corps. They were also playing on a fast indoor field which favors the offense/home team.

On the endzone PI call, he made the best play possible. Without the PI, the catch is made for the touchdown. Interfere and break up the pass and yes, the other team gets the ball inside the 5 and four shots at the endzone, but they don't get the immediate 6 points. In that situation, he made the right decision.

Worley gets the majority of the targets because Bradberry is perceived as a top quality DB (and he is certainly developing into one). But he's in there and fighting for it. That's how your day goes if you are a team's CB2.

Norman always showed some flashes, he just freelanced too much for the coaches' liking early on. Worley has never shown the flashes that's Norman did early on.

I don’t mind Worley as much as most folks do. He’s getting picked on a lot. But that means he’s getting more game reps. And Bradberry is shut down already since they are always going after Worley.

Norman showed some fire but he’s technique was not there for a better part of his early years, it wasn’t just freelancing.

The first PI seemed debatable, if not necessary on a free play for the defense, so I can't get angry with that one.

The second PI called on him in the endzone was bullcrap.

I honestly don't think he did horrible yesterday, and if the recent memory of the huddle is any indication, Worley could still turn out fine and labeling a pick a bust after only 16 games played through a career is a bit premature.

I agree on that second call. That was such a nit pick of a PI.

But also, we gave up the fourth most passing yards per game in 2016, and this year we’re giving up the fifth least. And we’ve faced Tom Brady and Drew Brees. Who average 260 & 283 passing yards a game for their entire careers.

If Worley can supposedly only be #2 CB backup quality, and we still hold teams under 200 net passing yards per game and less than 215 receiving yards per game, then I’m okay with his performances.

When you subtract yards after catch, we’re allowing teams to average just 5.3 yards per completed pass. Teams are getting 41% of their receiving yards against us after the catch, and considering the average pass length, that seems to be as much of a linebacker and nickel corner problem in tackling after the catch, as it is a Daryl Worley issue.

He’s fine. Let him be great.
