Do y'all think JR would just hand the GM job back to Hurney?

the truth is Richardson made an illogical, emotional decision when he fired gettleman. Illogical because it was days before the season started AND we had a competent GM just a few months prior on roster. Emotional because it obviously involved Gettleman's "impasse" attitude toward veterans.

What makes anyone believe he would behave any differently when it comes season's end and he has to relieve Hurney of his GM duties? Sounds like he would illogically believe Hurney is a good choice to be GM and emotionally be invested in his friendship with him

Time will tell us what is going to happen, but none of the parties involved will probably tell us anything about the whys.

The idea that any of us have the business smarts or understanding that Jerry Richardson does is pretty asinine, though. There are a number here who think he is a doddering old fool with no understanding of the principals of management, business, professional football or even human resources.

Luckily, they consume his product rather than the other way around.

Good post.  At the end of the day, this is a business, one that makes and is worth tons of $$, win or lose.

Hurney made more than mistakes with contracts like putting us in a cap hell hole that lasted for good while and slowly fixed that ridiculous unnecessary mistake.

Those are the same things

Please stop with the Hurney finding good players bit.  His track record for first rounders is pretty good but after that it was a crap shoot.   Might as well trade away any pick in the 2nd round because he was terrible in 2nd round picks.   He tried his damnest and nearly succeeded in trading away the rights to Cam for Pickles.

GMs around the NFL must laugh at us.  All they gotta do is put some BS offer on the table and Hurney is going to take it.

Maybe he learned his lesson and god I hope so if we go back to his BS as a GM.   If he retains Rivera and Shula after the season my interest in this team will deflate.

We are wasting the talents of a QB that under a great offensive mind might have already won the SB a couple of times.

Hurney isnt going anywhere. D.G. probably didn't like JR trying to impose his will on him. JR got his hand puppet back to do his bidding. Makes me sick. Only this team would bring back a zero that put them in the toilet to begin with.

Marty Hurney's hits - Julius Peppers, Will Witherspoon, Jordan Gross, Chris Gamble, Travelle Wharton, Thomas Davis, Evan Mathis, Deangelo Williams, James Anderson, Jon Beason, Ryan Kalil, Charles Johnson, Jonathan Stewart, Gary Barnidge, Captain Munnerlyn, Greg Hardy, Josh Norman, Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly,

Gettleman's hits - Star Lotuleilei, Kawaan Short, Trai Turner, James Bradberry.

There is a massive discrepancy there. Hurney may not have hit every single time but goddamnit he could find superstars. Every single one of my favorite players in Panthers history are a part of the team because of Hurney, except for Steve Smith.

Seriously?  James Anderson, Barnidge, Mathis.

Do you remember how long Hurney was drafting for us?  Do you remember the 2nd round draft picks?

Hurney was average in the draft, and awful with roster management and salary cap management...you know, some of the most important traits of a good GM.

Hurney is, and will continue to be an awful GM.

Was DG perfect?  Hell no, but he was worlds better than Hurney for this team.

Because Devin Funchess and Kony Ealy are lighting the world on fire!

poo, Dave couldn't even hit big on 1st round picks.

KB and Star are about as big a "hit" as you can get where we were drafting those years.

Shaq was a Ron pick, his defense needs cover LB's to work, and everyone though TD was on his last leg.

Butler, a pick I didn't like, is still young, and could pay dividends if we can't retain Star (different player I know)

Funchess is a starter on this team, Ealy started in the Super Bowl.  Left out Short and Bradberry on your 2nd rounders huh...was that on purpose, or just an oversight?

Hurney had 11 drafts here, produced 1 longterm starter in the 2nd round....1.

DG was here for 5, and produced 2 already, and possibly 3 if Funch can stay on track.

I firmly believe that JR will explore all options and interview some of the youngest, brightest potential GM's out there.  I think having Hurney on board with the search will be a huge asset as well.

Oh who am I kidding.  Hurney is our GM and we are fugged (except for 1st round picks...we are good there).

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
