The Fire Sale Theory

Where do you get 2nd round picks for barely in shape, bad route running, slow WR's with a slight diva streak and a bad football IQ?   Who would also be due an 8.4 million dollar salary in the upcoming season for you to keep them from FA?

You seem to be making up stories here.

The fact is, that for all intents and purposes,  KB was essentially  in the midst of his third NFL season, and even with all of the supposed faults that you have brought up,  KB was still basically a thousand yard receiver---OK, 950---or whatever, and an end zone monster.  Color me crazy,  but I  saw the improvement from a route running standpoint, and possibly blocking.  Moreover,  for all the brouhaha over his weight,  he came into the season pretty fit which was a stark contrast to how he appeared several weeks prior. That showed some motivation. At the end of the day,  his production has to be replaced somewhere.

One thing I think that you should remember is that, reportedly,  the Bills came to us.  Beane doesn't strike me as stupid. Anything but...

If a benching doesn't work out, you can reverse course.

Trade a guy away and then realize your offense actually got worse? Too bad. No refunds.

Reverse to what?  How can it get much worse?   He can't get separation.  Can he body people out?  Yes.  But what have people been doing lately? They play off and sit on inside routes.  That's leading to tips/pop-ups/picks, etc.

KB isn't getting any faster. Any better at route running.  May get slightly better motivational wise, but why trying to hope he turns into something he is not.

He bogs the offense down.  He's is limited.  Our offensive line is barely adequate to allow for deeper plays to develop or for his slow ass to get "open"

Why have a limited number 1 WR?   Also, if we wait to end of the season.. what do we get?  Nada.  We aren't resigning him @ 8.4.  So it's best decision for everyone.  Bills get their new #1.  Carolina gets 3rd , 7th and get his slow ass off the field.   Maybe improves the offense, or it's not making it "significantly" worse.

Sorry, I'm not buying this fire sale theory....

1. Kevin Benjamin was set to make between $8-$9 million dollars if we picked up his option after this season.

2. His career up until this point has not warranted receiving that kind of money.

(You draft on potential, you give money based on performance. Not saying that Kelvin Benjamin is horrible, but if you are the best piece of poo in a pile of poo, you're still poo.)

3. Have to lock up Norwell and Star

4. Funchess has been the better receiver to date.

I am a die hard Panther fan. I play madden CFM online and only play as the Panthers and never trade my players away. I hated to see Benjamin go, but the writing was on the wall. Rather get something for him now. The Bills were ready and willing to make that trade because they lack the big receiver that Benjamin is. We have that in Funchess.

KB is not the start of a fire sale all of us knew the offense was out of balance and we had a lack of speed. Yet everyone is acting like the sky is falling..

So what will the talk be like if the Falcons win on Sunday? The Panthers just placed themselves in must win mode.

I think this is solely based on fact Panthers want more speed on offense and clearly think Funchess is better than KB long term. Also appears they didn’t plan on signing KB long term and are trying to get anything they can for him.

I don’t like the decision, but I also wouldn’t like paying KB 8-9 million a year which he clearly will want. I don’t think he’s a franchise player with his work ethic and attitude.

Why not bench him instead of trading him then?

Not saying I wanted him traded but every time a player of consequence walks, this board goes nuts about why we didn't trade them when we could have. If Marty wasn't going to resign him, then maybe this was best, long term.

Part of the reason we've had such a terrible run game is that nobody is threatened by our passing game. Do you really think anyone feels more threatened now?

Ding ding ding ding.  We have a winner.  This.

But I hope we're both wrong and that somehow Funch, Samuel and Shepard step up and show out.

I don't really buy the fire sale.  I think it was an opportunity issue.  Trade a guy for some kind of value, or watch him under-perform as his knee acts up, watch his weight rapidly change season to season (which is not healthy).  I can see WHY he did it, but it still feels like I just got gut punched.

Was he setting the world on fire?  No.  No one on the team was.  Was he our best WR?  Without question.  They must really think Devin Funchess is the answer to all of their problems...

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
