THE SERIES

·         Carolina improves to 6-8 all-time against Minnesota, including 3-2 at home.

·         The Panthers are now 4-2 at home this season, winning three straight at home.

NEWTON ENGINEERS 14TH CAREER GAME-WINNING DRIVE

·         Cam Newton made a 62-yard run to set up a game-winning 1-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Stewart with less than two minutes remaining.

·         Newton has 14 career game-winning drives and two this season (previously at New England).

·         Newton’s 62-yard run was his second run over 60 yards this season (69 vs. Miami, 11/13). He is the first quarterback in NFL history with two runs over 60 yards in the same season.

PANTHERS RUSH FOR OVER 200

·         Helped by big runs from Cam Newton (62) and Jonathan Stewart (60), the Panthers rushed for 216 yards as a team, the most allowed by Minnesota this season. Before today, the longest run that Minnesota allowed was a 29-yard run.

·         Carolina and Chicago are the only two teams with three or more games of 200 or more rushing yards this season. The last time that Carolina had at least three 200-yard rushing games was in 2009.

STEWART SETS NEW CAREER MARK

·         Jonathan Stewart set a new career high with three rushing touchdowns. He finished with 103 rushing yards, including a 60-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Stewart has 16 career 100-yard rushing games, two behind DeAngelo Williams for the franchise mark.

·         Stewart becomes the eighth different player in franchise history with a three-touchdown game, and the first since Mike Tolbert on 12/30/12 at New Orleans.

·         Stewart is one of three players (Mike Gillislee, Mark Ingram) in the NFL this season with a game of three rushing touchdowns.

THIEVES RETURN

·         Carolina extended its streak with a takeaway to six games, as Carolina made three takeaways on two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The Panthers have won the turnover battle by a combined margin of 10-5 since the Tampa Bay game (10/29). The Panthers have gone 5-1 over that stretch.

·         Cornerbacks Daryl Worley and James Bradberry each made interceptions against Minnesota. They marked the first interceptions by Carolina’s cornerbacks this season.

·         Since 2015, Carolina has made 48 interceptions, the second-most in the NFL.

SACK LUNCH

·         The Panthers tallied six sacks against Minnesota, tied for the most by Carolina’s defense this year, and the most allowed by Minnesota.

·         Mario Addison and Julius Peppers each had a sack as they share the team lead at 9.5 sacks this season. Addison has 17.5 sacks over the last 20 games, ranking fourth in the NFL over that span.

·         Kawann Short made two sacks for his second multi-sack game of the season.

·         Kyle Love now has 3.5 sacks on the season while Luke Kuechly picked up his first sack of the year.

PANTHERS TIE FRANCHISE RECORD

·         Carolina has now gone 17 games without allowing a 100-yard individual rusher. That streak ties the franchise record set over 2001-2002. Carolina’s streak is currently the third-longest in the NFL.

·         The last time that an opponent had a 100-yard rush game against Carolina was at Seattle (12/4/16) when Thomas Rawls topped 100.

only thing you really left out is how well funchess has kept doing since KB has gone out. He's on pace for over 1000 receiving yards and double digit receiving tds.

Funchess' 762 receiving yards and 7 receiving TDs is at least the 3rd best receiving season out of any Panther receiver since Cam came into the the league in 2011. Smitty had 1394 receiving yards and  7 touchdowns in Cams rookie 2011 season. In a similar vein in that time period, was 2014 KBs rookie season , 1008 receiving yards, 9 TDs.

I assume the above comment is directed strictly to WR options, right?

Still... wow.

That makes one helluva comment about the trash that has been provided as WR options for Cam for almost 7 years now.

Also, our O-line play was sturdier in pass protect and much better in the rushing game than we've seen in a while.

Overall, we picked a good day to have a good day against a top-notch opponent.

Cam was in control of the game and played with a lot of, I don't know, Cam-ness. We broke past 30 points against a very respected defense and our defense slowed down a high-powered offense enough to get the win.

And if Case Keenum isn't the Vikings starter next year, then he's going to be getting a big contract from someone. He's matured a lot in the last year and he's good, very good.

I recall Ginn had 10 TDs in 2015, but don't remember his yards total...

Yea I think like the 3rd or 4th WR on GB gets that in his sleep.(when Rodgers is healthy)

So yea that's better atm totally but Funchess will beat it by the end of the season.

Thanks for looking up the yards.  My Internet is so lousy lately that it makes even a simple stat look up quite a chore.

don't they correct that later in the season?

They can't overturn a bad call by the refs. And since they didn't rule him down, they aren't suppose to give Peppers credit for the sack. Of course things like that can be changed if the NFL really wanted but the Panthers and Peppers aren't going to push the NFL on a stat.

    • Let's be completely honest about this... Our WR room is AT and a bunch of question marks. Thielen is the only guy we know who knows the route tree completely, understands play calls and can regularly get open/beat close coverage when necessary. He's long in the tooth, isn't the speediest guy on the field but he plays like a pro, starting level wide receiver. Xavier, last season looked great at first, but man he kind of petered out down the stretch and would disappear in a number of games. He wasn't reliable on routes or getting open and where he was supposed to be a king at contested catches, he often looked a bit intimidated. I'm not saying he's a washout by any means. Anyone with his size, speed and catch radius could make it big in the NFL, but can he do it? He'll need to show more than he did in the preseason before we can really rely on him as a WR1 or WR2.  Coker was a revelation last season, he really played way above his (non)draft status and flashed multiple times in games and was a steady performer. What we need to find out, though, is whether he was benefiting from being an unknown that wasn't getting maximum effort from opposing DBs or if he was just outworking and outhustling everyone on the field. We should find out this season. We sure as hell didn't find out much in the pre-season (from him or any receiver or QB for that matter). He's still a question mark, but I think he has the look of the real deal. He might be this generation's next Thielen. Now, let's talk about Tet. High first round draft pick, first true WR off the board this year. Stellar career out west in college. Has the swagger of the WR1. And man, y'all are going to get mad about this but... he comes across as a mook. And in the pre-season he performed, well, not so great against poor opposition of second and third stringers. Yeah, he caught that one moonshot ball in the first game but really, nothing else lighting the place up. Rookie endzone drop in that game, too. He's still young and adjusting, I'm sure, but I was hoping to see something of a breakthrough kind of guy. I'm still looking. Hunter Renfro? Gosh, I hope he can make the team and make a comeback to his old form. It would be such a great story. But maybe neither one of those happens. We won't know until Tuesday and then, if he makes it past there it could be weeks. So, TL;DR: AT is all we can bank on right now. We couldn't afford to let him go considering the number of unknowns we'd be throwing out there for our QB, who himself is still an unknown. One thing to add: Our receivers coaching group has their work cut out for them. I hope they are up to the task, but the pre-season gave me little reason to believe in them. And I really need something to believe in here in Carolina.
    • Same I think Randsom is a baller..... hopefully we don't have to suffer through 4-8 games of Scott blowing azz to get him on the feild.
    • Linebacker is the biggest need - I hope we figure out a way to address it. Krys Barnes is the only one who even moderately flashed.  Super nervous about Trevin/Rozeboom as a duo (Still like Trevin) I'd be excited if we had a better vet to mentor Trevin.  Or a better younger guy to support Rozeboom.  They just don't fit well and it may be a big problem against the run, even with our DL much improved.
