Baker smiling after big penalty led to scuffle in the locker room

Quote

An ugly screaming match that erupted into a scuffle between teammates in the locker room following the Bucs 22-19 loss at Carolina Sunday involved the off-sides penalty by defensive tackle Chris Baker.

Apparently, several Bucs players took issue with Baker smiling and lack-of-remorse attitude following the game.

During the incident, captured on the post-game radio show, linebacker Lavonte David is heard yelling to stop quarterback Jameis Winston from confronting Baker.

"Yo, yo, Jameis! Jameis! Jameis!'' David shouts.

Then middle linebacker Kwon Alexander begins swearing at Baker. David left the interview to intervene.

Facing fourth-and-3 at the 5-yard line, Baker was warned by defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and others to watch the hard count of quarterback Cam Newton, who had drawn several encroachment penalties.

"Yeah, he had a good hard count,'' Baker said. "We were aware of that at the beginning of the game. We've got to be aware of his hard count. I just had a mental error, because right before the snap, Gerald and the other guys told me to be alert for the hard count and I just got anxious and made a bad play.''

McCoy confirmed he had warned Baker.

"Yes I did,'' McCoy said. "Whatever. Moving on. Next.''

Baker, who signed a three-year, $15.75-million contract as a free agent from the Redskins, hasn't lived up to expectations this season. He has 32 tackles and a half sack.

What's more, some players and coaches feel as if his attitude has been poor from the beginning in terms of effort, especially given what the Bucs are paying him. Unfortunately, the level of accountability demonstrated in the locker room Sunday didn't happen earlier in the season or training camp.

Cam’s cadence has been on point lately. I wonder what he has changed up that keeps getting guys to jump? I’ve noticed he isn’t snapping the ball with one second to go on the game clock as often.

Was wondering the same thing.  Looked at film earlier in the year, only difference I can tell has been a little earlier in the play clock , and Ryan Kalil doing Jedi mind tricks.  Also the way he brings his hands up to catch snap has up to catch the snap.

Only thing I can tell by my untrained eye.

Between this and the Eli Apple debacle with the Giants, it just goes to show how important leadership is in the locker room.

And why, to a degree, we should be somewhat appreciative of Rivera, DG and JR not wanting to bring in guys with character concerns.

    • What people fail to understand is Lance had a college career that lasted about as long as teenage boys first intercourse.  To say he was raw was an understatement.  So much so that even a QB whisperer had a difficult time molding him into a polished NFL product on top of multiple nagging injuries.  The dud is in his mid-twenties, finally healthy and little miles on the tread.  Low risk, high reward.  If he's available, it would be stupid not to kick the tires.  It took Darnold and Mayfield to hit their 3rd or 4th team for things to finally click.  This is Lance's 3rd stop, I believe.  It's either time for it to click for him or be relegated to a full time backup. Roll the dice....
    • Wrong.  At least we put a QB sneak in the play book and and add plays over 20 yards.
    • I don’t know if people realize that Evan’s was one of the top TE prospects in college  before having some horrible injuries. I wanna say he had two major injuries in back to back seasons which limited his play and dropped his draft stock.
