Could Raleigh eventually host a Franchise?

In regards to Raleigh I think a more logical question might be could another NBA franchise work out there?  I would think probably not with the way college basketball is.

There are more UNC and Duke fans in Charlotte than Hornets fans.

College basketball is more popular in Charlotte than NBA. It would make even less sense in Raleigh regardless of population

Did you actually read that article?

It said in 10 years the Research Triangle CSA (Combined Statistical Area), which is a combination of the Raleigh/Cary & the Durham/Chapel Hill MSA's surpass the 2017 population of the Charlotte CSA.

So if Charlotte doesn't grow a single person over the next 10 years it could happen.

And Raleigh boosters always conflagate the percentage growth rate of the Raleigh/Cary MSA (which is by percentage the fastest growing metro area) with the RTP (Triangle) CSA, which is not growing as fast when you factor in Durham, etc but has a larger overall population closer to Charlotte area.

Anyway, long story short. Raleigh and the Triangle is undoubtably fast-growing. Raleigh already has a significant sports presence with the college sports teams there and the Hurricanes. The area doesn't lack for sports options.

However, Charlotte is still significantly larger by any measure today, and continues to adds more resident in real numbers every year. In 10 years, Charlotte will still be larger than Raleigh and the Charlotte CSA will be larger than the RTP CSA unless Charlotte just ceases to grow altogether.

Saying Raleigh is growing faster than Charlotte is like saying Charlotte is growing faster than NYC. Both are technically true by looking at percentage but in real numbers it's not true.

Anyway, Charlotte is the logical place for a NFL team in the Carolinas by any measurement (population, existing sports teams, geography, etc.)

And that's not a knock on Raleigh which I love to visit. Both areas are growing very fast, and the temptation for both areas is to believe (and to manipulate numbers) to seem the fasting growing.

You're  correct.

The point is though, that Raleigh and the surrounding area have more than enough people to support an NFL franchise.  The Panthers arrived in Charlotte more than 20 years ago when the population wasn't what it is today in Charlotte or Raleigh.

Charlotte Rank: 17

Raleigh Rank: 43

Charlotte MSA: 22

Raleigh MSA: 43

 Raleigh–Durham–Chapel Hill Population: 2,037,430

 Charlotte–Concord–Gastonia Population: 2,632,249

14. Raleigh, NC

Pop. Growth 2016: 2.43% (5)
Proj. Pop. Growth 2017: 3.09% (3)
19. Charlotte

Pop. Growth 2016: 1.78% (13)
Proj. Pop. Growth 2017: 2.04% (9)

Raleigh is near the top in growth however to get to Charlottes population your need to grow much faster or have Charlotte decline. Your already near the top so growing faster isn't going to happen. Charlotte isn't declining so that isn't going to happen.

Right now at the current rate you can't catch up to us. Maybe one day but we are talking maybe many many years for that to happen so probably not in our lifetime.

Bring a team to Greensboro or Winston! Sorry Panthers, id switch my loyalties with the quickness if that ever happened.

It won’t, but it’s cool to think about it.

I remember a few years ago when there was talk of moving the Minnesota Twins to the Triad.  It was never seriously considered, and the area doesn't have the necessary population to support a MLB team, but it was interesting to talk about anyway.

    • I thought he was from watching him play and also doing his first HC job. I thought he was the real deal  Apparently what happened is Kraft committed to Mayo and I don’t remember the timeline exactly - but Vrabel was unemployed at the same time Belichick was unemployed. They both were fired after the 2023 season.  Kraft hired Mayo. Who was kind of an obvious disaster. He probably already had the deal in place but I will give Kraft credit for not sleeping. With Vrabel out there for 2025 he made the move he needed to make and if it hurt Mayo’s feelings then oh well.  I guess you can tell I am not fond of Kraft but that was a really savvy move. At his age, pretty good. Still has it.
    • It’s going to feel like a home game for the bills. There are so many of their fans that live down here now, and many of them have never seen Allen play in person since their last visit was 8 years ago. It didn’t matter for the cowboys game, but it might here. I think we likely lose a close one. Probably a questionable flag or two that doesn’t go our way. X factor for Buffalo will be Kincaid and Knox. If we do win it’s because we get ahead and play keep away from Allen. FYI- I have many friends who are Bills fans that are fed up with Beane who we all revere and think is the one that got away. They feel like he was great to land Josh but has done a terrible job of building around him (especially at WR) and rely on him to become super man to win- sounds kind of familiar, like the last time we had a franchise QB.
    • I always thought of him as an uptight military family dude, didn't know he needs to wash that mouth out with soap lol.
