This draft class may not be the strongest...

What started as a search on Orlando Brown, and perusing different scouting reports, has led me to some skepticism regarding this draft class as a whole.  Not to say that there won't be your usual surprises, revelations and busts, but I think that maybe we should go into the draft with more of an open mind because at many positions there isn't necessarily a big gap between the first and third rounders this year. Yes, there is the Combine, Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game, but that thought is not likely going to change that much because the preponderance of the guys have been scouted for years. But, like Matt Miller said, here's to hoping that we find that gem.

I am a WR guy, and I've already let you know how I feel about the class in the other thread, and reading some others' thoughts on the subject, my mind hasn't changed. I told you that you might want to value the free agents a little more, and Cleveland.com's Matt Goul agrees.

I've already seen a few posts on here bemoaning some quality DE and DT prospects deciding to continue their college careers and thereby making this class weaker at the positions, so I really don't know what to think about this either.  We never know how the draft is going to go, but there should be some quality defensive backs available.  One thought is that perhaps teams will make a run on QBs, and will push other quality players down, but even the QBs aren't necessarily first round material, and many believe that there isn't a big difference between the  projected first rounder(s) and the subsequent rounds. And, even if there is a rush, because the draft is not really loaded with true first rounders, then we're not necessarily going to be gaining a whole lot if teams decide to pick QBs in front of us. 

Like I said, DBs are intriguing, as well as RBs, but perhaps there isn't enough of a distinction to justify taking one in the first. I don't know. I think that this draft and strategy is going to be wide open as for what actually happens.  As such, at least to me, if there is someone to be gained in free agency at any need-based position, then we might wanna go after them. 

 

Look over this article to familiarize yourself with the "players" in the 2018 draft at every position. It's not too long, and at least it will put some people on your mind.  And, by all means, give us your thoughts.

On an off note, with the daft class being a little "meh" as it is, perhaps the Hurney haters will find comfort in knowing that there is not too much to screw up or lose. I read somewhere (in different words) that this might be the perfect draft to trade down and amass more picks so that you can throw a little more darts on the board and see if they stick.  Moreover, it might be a good draft to roll the dice and divvy up a few picks to get who you want in free agency also. We'll see.

Hurney's biggest sins as a GM were cap management and trading up. He was always a good first round picker. It was only when he started moving up in drafts that he missed. 

If this is a reformed Hurney, I agree that he may stay put instead or accumulate more picks. He'll pick during his first round, but I could see him playing around with our 2nd and two 3rd rounders to accumulating more.

Maybe Hurney learned his lesson and will take advantage of another GM the way they did to him by trading our 2nd this year for some team's 1st next year...

The whole class is kinda weak. Even if there is a rush on QBs, we still may not end up with a heavy-hitter-day-one starter.  Of course we are kinda weak at in the defensive backfield department.

Draft classes just keep getting weaker and weaker.

This is the perfect draft to load up in the secondary. Get 2 safteys and 1 or 2 good corners. Can cut Coleman and Adams. We'll have alot of CBs but thats good for the competition, we need a huge upgrade at CB and both safteys.  We're likely going to have to wait until next year to upgrade DE and replace Davis at OLB.

We really shoud also get a TE . Andrews, Goedert, Hurst, Fumagali , Gesicki . Keep in mind I think Dickson is a free agent too, combine that with Olsen being injured last year ..

Yea and 1st round DEs rarely make an impact anyway in their first year. I’d rather splash for one in FA even if it means giving up star

I can't remember if it's my fourth or fifth beer.  Either way, I feel some type of way about people appreciating effort.  Huddlers need to appreciate effort,  even if they don't necessarily agree with every point. Just my 0.02.

Just like just about every other draft, there will be some highly touted prospects drafted high in the 1st that bust and there will be overlooked guys drafted in the mid-late rounds that go on to be All-Pros.
