Don't Expect Ryan Kalil to be Cut

I have no problem with him playing one more year.  Also if you know you are probably going to let Norwell go I can even understand it more.  Would be nice to draft someone that could be groomed for a year.

I will say though that a lot of teams would probably try to force him into some kind of pay cut though and I would think that that is reasonable.  I have my doubts if we will.

If we plan on playing Moton at guard it wouldn't be a terrible idea to draft a center and LT prospect.  The center could take over for Ryan next year and the LT could take over for Matt if we decide to part ways next year or the year after.

If we think Moton or Williams can ultimately play LT then that would give us the option of going guard and center.

I would've held my cards a little closer to the vest than that though and tried to get him to take a pay cut. $10M+ cap hit for him at this point is just too heavy.

Not a fan of Marty's comments. No need to cut him, but a paycut would be fair. Like others have stated, he's missed way too many games the past two years and has a high cap hit this year. Cut it to $5M and use that additional money elsewhere.

Hurney just lost all leverage. Just when I thought he had figured out the error in his ways from the past......he goes full Hurndog.

Yep, absolutely nothing to be gained from publicly making those comments.

Do people really think that some boilerplate valedictory public comments will be a real factor during behind-closed-doors contract negotiations?

Yes. It won't be at the top of the negotiation conversation, but I do think it shows Hurney's emotional attachment. Will his comments be the nail in the coffin or what the agent & player use to get the deal done....no. But to say that public comments from the GM who has a history of overplaying his hand with internal contracts, gives me angina.

I love Kalil.  He's been the best center this team has ever had.  On top of that, he's super intelligent and an absolute riot.

But that said, if he were on just about any other team he'd probably have been cut already after last season.

It'd certainly be great to see him go out looking good, but I'm not really expecting that, and betting on that could be a big mistake.

    • Rags lost again. All is right in the hockey world.
    • He’s responsible for two drafts classes. The first was one of the worst drafts I’ve ever seem. The second one is showing a ton of promise. I’m somewhere between skeptical and hopeful on Morgan.
    • I'm a big fan of Dan. His ability to find productive players deep in the draft will pay off.  I'm going to give him 1.5 draft classes right now, because I do think it's a little unfair to evaluate his first year when he got the job in January, especially when we went into that draft not having a first round pick.  XL and Brooks are still big time TBD players. Both still have incredibly high ceilings, but both have also given us legitimate reasons to have a lot of pause. Trevin Wallace, Chau Smith Wade and Jatavion Sanders have IMO outplayed their draft position early in their careers. That's a great thing. He also got Coker and Demani Richardson as UDFAs that year. Given the situation we were in, I really don't mind the gamble on the high ceiling guys. Still may work out, still may not, but if you made a checklist of ideal situation for an NFL GM to walk into, ours was near the bottom of that list.  Every single 2025 pick is contributing in some way. That typically doesn't happen. I am absolutely blown away by this draft class 6 games in. Even the best GM's miss on occasion, and we can't expect Dan to be 100% on drafts moving forward. Ryan Fitzgerald was an excellent find as well.  Comparing our last two drafts to the previous few is pretty shocking. Can you imagine this season without our Rookies? It would not be good. Additionally, this roster only has 6 players with more than 6 years of experience, and two of those are specialist.  The next step is equally important, and still very much TBD. We have to avoid Cap Chaos.
