Ryan Kalil $9.9 mil cap hit

Read this morning that Ryan has played only 14 games in the past 2 season and counts for $9.9 mil against our cap this year. It concerns me we haven't released him or forced him to restructure that contract heading into FA. I know he still has value and he said this was his last year, but this is exactly the kind of business decision Hurney must learn to make. I was encouraged by the release of Stewart, but this is discouraging. I would tell Ryan we love you, but we need to restructure this contract or your farewell tour will be in the uniform of some other team (similar to the way Gettleman handled Gross and Smitty, with a little more tact).

We don't need to restructure, we need to either negotiate a pay cut, or release.

That said, Ryan is AWFULLY important to Cam and our running game...not to mention we are likely losing Norwell, and we will have a fresh face in there at LG.

Yeah, it's pretty much impossible at this point to restructure him without extending him. And you certainly can't extend a guy who's retiring next year.

Definitely hoping he plays more this year than he has previous years. Otherwise that contract is going to be a disaster.

Its a deep draft for C/G. There is perhaps the notion that you see how you come away there on draft weekend and if you feel confident with what you obtain then you June 1 him. If not, then at least you've got the position locked down for another year.

We need Kalil. That’s the problem. We’re about to lose Norwell. It’s worth keeping the line consistent to have Kalil on the roster. There’s a big drop off between him and Larsen.

Can't be consistent when you aren't on the field honestly.

    • Why would we not be contenders? As long as Bryce plays like he did when he came back, we absolutely can be contenders...that is...   if the defense plays better... which is why adding someone like Ramsey when we have a QB on a rookie deal and can afford it makes sense IMO. No one thought of the Commanders being contenders last year or the Texans the year before and so on and so forth. Top-end QB play, especially for a guy on a rookie deal, changes everything in terms of timelines. Regardless of what this board thinks, I hope the front office is willing to he aggressive in thks window we currently have with a rookie QB deal
    • Would absolutely love to have him. I dont think he would require more than a 5th rounder. The biggest thing with his contract is the amount of guaranteed money. As long as they can work out and scenario where the Panthers aren't on the hook for a lot of that, I think it's a no-brainer. The Panthers can come up with $20M at the drop of a hat with restructuring Moton's contract, so there definitely isn't an issue from a money perspective. Jaycee paired with Ramsey along with Mike Jack would give us one of the best CB groups in the league. The one caveat I see is that safety still remains our biggest current weakness. We need a starting caliber S more than CB, simply put. But adding someone like Ramsey would be amazing as long as the compensation made sense. Ramsey could also play for FS snaps also. I also dont understand this nonsense about being seasons away. We have a QB on a rookie deal who was playing at an elite level to end last season. Within reason, now is absolutely the time to make moves like trading for Ramsey.
    • He'd be a huge upgrade for this year, but we're still not going to be contenders with him and I'd rather keep the cap space to roll into next season to spend on a younger player who can be an impact starter for us for the next 3-5 years while we're hoping to contend.
