It really is laughable how this team prioritizes players from the area or who went to school in the area over better players.

Ranked in PFF's top 30 corners in the NFL three years in a row. Even if you aren't the biggest fan of PFF the stats show the kid can play. He's also only 26 so his prime is still ahead of him. At worst he is very good competition and depth. At best we have a solid second starter. Hard to be mad at that. The fact he played at Duke is irrelevant.

My comment was more about searcy and this is just another example.

As if proximity to family doesn't help players decide between multiple similar offers.

Yeah that's why jimmy graham, Melvin Ingram, and Keenan Allen were begging to play for us. That's why eric Ebron chose us over the colts. That why Hakeem nicks signed her 3 offseasons in a row.

Who is better in this loaded FA CB market over a week into frwe agency?

This is a good signing. We're still coming out of this draft with at least two new DBs. The earlier they're taken the better.

I've been banging the Delvin Breaux/ E.J. Gaines drum for us, but a guy that I feel would be an excellent addition is a hometown kid, Ross Cockrell.

1229-Cockrell-Center1.jpg.5c504761a03110e8fe78c269cccc499e.jpg

6'0"   191lbs.  26 years old

4.56 40 - 36.5" Vert. - 122 Broad - 29 7/8 arms

We were all big fans of the Breeland signing prior to his DR foot demise. In comparing the measurables and background of Cockrell and Breeland, I see a similar player on the brink of being a tough CB to go up against.

Breeland was 5'11, 195, same age, from South Carolina....ran a 4.6 40, 34.5" Vert, 123 Broad, and has 31" arms at the combine.

Their 2017 stats......

Cockrell: 50 total tackles - 37 solo - 11 pass defended - 3 INTs - 0TD

Breeland: 50 total tackles - 37 solo - 19 pass defended - 1 INTs - 1TD

I do think Breeland is the better corner in that he has an alpha-mentality. His confidence shows on the field and his abilities to break up passes and create turnovers is superior to Cockrell.

However, Cockrell came on strong at the end of 2017 for the Giants and was the CB1 (due to injury). When given the chance he stepped up big and is flexible enough to play inside if need be, though he is much better outside.

With what's left on the market, I do think Cockrell is being overlooked. He presents value, as he would be much cheaper than Breeland was and at only 26, was really starting to breakthrough with the Giants last year. I've seen a few places where NYG fans thought he performed better and want him more than Eli Apple.

In the below article, they show his ratings in a lot of important DB metrics as being near the top of all CBs in the NFL. It also says that he is better suited for a zone-heavy scheme and that his intelligence and instincts would play to his strengths in this environment, rather than a man-heavy D.

For PFF fans, Cockrell had a 81.6 grade and was ranked #39 amongst CBs. Breeland was at 79 and #54, respectively.

I assume he could be had for much less than what we were going to pay Breeland, and could be a gem that thrives here opposite Bradberry. Spend the money saved on a safety like Eric Reid, Kenny Vaccaro or maybe Ron Parker and then draft a complimentary safety in the first two rounds.

TL;DR version: Cockrell is young, similar to Breeland in untapped potential and better than Worley, while being had on the cheap.

Great job, man

We now have two guys in the Top 30 of CB's in Bradyberry and Cockrell. Corn is also essentially playing his rookie season this year and should be afforded a few games to figure out the slot. Assuming we have two quality safeties, our defense has the chance to keep chugging along in the Top 10 of the NFL.

Dontari Poe will also likely create a second guy who can rush the passer from the interior. Think of 3rd and 10 with Peppers, KK, Poe, and Mario Addison lined up.

I think that has zero to do with it...that is more a fan mindset...but if you are right I am glad Peppers is a Tar Heel...shoulda drafted Trubisky...MJ Stewart come on down...

    • Why? AI already taking jobs, running up power bills, drinking all the water and just bad for the environment but hey lest try to shoehorn another useless way to use it.
    • I'm going rogue in R1 but there's so much confusion around us. Last year, we were going Walker or Williams and caught folks off guard with TMac. The previous year we LOVED Legette and it was no surprise when his name was called. This year, I think we nail three areas that weren't totally addressed in FA.  R1 - Kayden McDonald Full disclosure, I want Thienemann here, but think he goes before 19. Some might see an "overdraft" but McDonald unlocks so many people on our D. Having a DT the caliber of McDonald let's Lloyd, Wallace and the newly drafted Hill flood the offensive backfield. Also opens up Moehrig and our EDGES to eat. Lastly, it also removes all the pressure on DB to be the primary facilitator in the trenches and A'Shawn will be missed. I don't care about Turk. McDonald is the only true DT worth of a R1 grade and Morgan seals up our trenches here w/ a kid from a blue blood school. R2 - Anthony Hill Jr *trade up*  I love JRod, but think a smart team takes him at the end of R1 (Seattle, NE w/ two d-minded coaches). Hill, Jr is a beast and lost in the shuffle with all the Styles/Allen/Rodriguez hype. He and Lloyd with DB and McDonald up front and flanked by Scourton/Phillips is nasty.  R3 - Hecht/Lew/Center du jour Let's stop the madness with ignoring this position in the draft. We need one and should start normalizing the capital invested in our OL with someone on a draft contract. He won't need to start day 1, but I think the right selection will push for starter reps. R4 - Bud Clark Not sure if he's here in R4 where we pick, but would fit the "type" of FS/roamer that we need opposite Moehrig and Ransom. Allows us to run 3-safety looks and really keep teams guessing with personnel packages. R5 - Kendrick Law The kind of WR we need. IDK if he's any different than Horn, Jr or Metchie but Law could be a dart throw that brings a deep threat to our WR corps I'm guessing one of the R5 picks is used to move up in R2 along with a '27 day 3 pick.   Post-draft, I sign Njoku to bring in a vet at TE. I'm also keeping my eyes open for pre-week 1 team cuts for a young CB that we could bring in to maybe plan for Mike Jack's departure next year. Flame away.... I know the McDonald pick will not make people happy.
    • Classic example on what AI is not currently good for.  It will create a baseline of statistics (which are fine but must be used alongside tape and other evals) and partner that with every rumor mongering dips*&$t on the web.
