"Why would I care?"

So says Washington State coach Mike Leach about developing players for their future football careers.

Quote

I pay no attention whatsoever to developing them for the next level. That’s somebody else’s job. Why would I care? We coach them the best that we can. We worry about putting them in the best positions they can be put in here at our school to accomplish the things that we need to accomplish. I do think it goes hand in hand though. I think if they’re in a good place and they get the proper coaching, then the better their chances are at the next level. We’re not gonna sit here and monkey around and worry about the next level. There’s no point in me sitting around trying to guess what they want at the next level. That would be a bunch of foolishness.

Mike Leach on developing players for the NFL: "Why would I care?"

Valid point?

Would it affect your view of drafting players from his program?

Yeah he just screwed up his recruitment.

Seriously. He basically just told his players and recruits that he doesn’t give a flying fug about them and he’s just in it for himself.

I get what he’s saying. It isn’t his job to develop NFL players, it’s his job to field the best college football team that he can. But when you’re recruiting players who have a goal of playing in the NFL you’re doing them a pretty big disservice by not trying to help them achieve that goal while also fielding the best college football team that you can.

I see his point. They aren’t some sort of training program for the nf- they are a college sports team trying to win games.

If they develop great college players who excel in their system, and win games- they win. If they spend their time monkeying around trying to pick and chose winners, and develop them for some unknown nfl team’s system, they are almost guaranteed to lose.

He probably said what most college coaches believe, but don't dare say.

They are there to win as many games as possible with the least amount of time involved. The goal is simplicity. Development is not a priority. Pros don't pay them to coach their players. Pro teams don't get involved, they're not allowed. To be honest, why should college coaches care. What's in it for them. They spend more time in development they'll see less immediate returns which is all the schools putting money into them care about. There is no real incentive for them to really develop and prepare them for the next level.

    • Very True--and I am a former HS English teacher.
    • Not a Moore fan-but he had a few good games last year-but I want players that scare you--Renfrow's route running and intelligence, Legette's size, speed, and strength, AT's intelligence and route running, Coker's body control, strong hands, and abilty to win contested catches, and TMac's size, body control, and ability to find soft spots in zone coverages.  Horn gives them the ability to stretch the field and he plays special teams.   Moore has a nice smile and can dance.  He filled in well last season, but to get better as a team, you have to upgrade your players.  I think Moore is a bottom of the roster guy who got bumped when we drafted 2 WRs and signed a legit free agent.  Here is the thing--TMac makes us better because he is great against the zone--man?  Good luck with that.  AT's role can be reduced, and that is probably a good thing.  He can specialize in situational football. Coker?  Just getting started. XL?  Just getting started.  Drafting TMac was probably a bit of a wake up call, but XL will be better as the 2. Renfrow?  I see him splitting reps with AT--keeping both fresh and giving different looks. Horn?  Watch the safety cheat his side when he is in the game--I see a young Steve Smith type in him, but he has yet to play a game.  I hear that Morgan loves him.
