Chuck Pagano wants to coach

I'm sure Chuck Pagano would prefer to be a head coach again, but he's not  expected to get that opportunity anytime soon. Gantt believes he'll have to start as an assistant and work his way up again...

..and we need a secondary coach.

Pagano has plenty of experience coaching defensive backs, and he's been damn good at it. He even spent some time as a DC both in the NFL and at the college level (at North Carolina no less).And while Chuck hasn't worked directly with Ron Rivera, his brother John did. John was a colleague of Rivera's in San Diego and succeeded him as their defensive coordinator when Rivera took over the Panthers.

That certainly doesn't approach the connection level of being Ron Rivera's old college teammate, but it's something.

Based on statements we've already heard from Rivera and Hurney, I fully expect Richard Rodgers to be named secondary coach sometime soon, but I'd much prefer someone with a better track record. With coaches like Pagano and Ray Horton available, I don't really like the idea of settling for our old special teams coach.

So here's hoping, but I'm not going to get my hopes up too high.

With the lack of development we saw from Bradberry and Worley last year I would greatly prefer some outside help for coaching the secondary. Bradberry regressed pretty dramatically and Worley looked about the same.

I'm a big Ron supporter, but I do think he's too stubborn when it comes to hiring coaches and trusting that the answer "is already on the roster."

unless he's desperate, I don't see him taking that far of a step back. 

I would love it if it happened, though.

I wish we could get a Talib type player in the secondary to bring some fire to the defense.....thats what we really need

head coaches go back to being position coaches all the time, Mike Tice and raheem morris are two off the top of my head.

Does that equate to all the time? Or it happens at times.

Absolutely fug that. Aqib Talib is a complete piece of poo and one of the few players in the league that would cause me to renounce my Panthers fandom immediately if we ever signed him.

I'm only asking because I don't know, but what was dungy's defense ranked while he was the Colt's HC? I don't remember it being all that good, especially their pass defense.

It happens quite often. Depends on the guy and the situation. If he wants to take a step back and do something less demanding after failing in the spotlight, it makes sense. He might try and find a coordinator position, but if he just wants to coach and not be in the spotlight, he can take a position coach position.
