Dave Gettleman’s cancer is in remission

Dave Gettleman’s cancer is in remission, as his recent scans have come back clean, The Post has learned.

People who have spoken recently with the Giants general manager say Gettleman has shared the positive news with them the past few days.

Gettleman, 67, revealed on June 5 that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. It is a type of cancer that starts in the white blood cells and can spread to different parts of the body.

A course of chemotherapy treatments caused Gettleman to lose his hair and eradicated the cancer. It is expected he will continue the treatments for the time being.

“Dave’s doing great, he was here [Tuesday], and he’s been doing his treatments,” said Pat Shurmur, hired by Gettleman as the Giants’ head coach. “That’s a process that he’s going through, but we communicate frequently. We’ve been in close touch all summer, I didn’t do much traveling, so I was here in town and Dave and I communicated quite a bit, actually.”

On Wednesday, Shurmur asked Gettleman to address the players as part of the first team meeting of training camp.

At the time of his diagnosis, Gettleman said, “The doctor’s outlook for the treatment and the prognosis is positive, and so am I.” His assistant, Kevin Abrams, picked up the slack when Gettleman was not feeling strong enough to fill his usual work responsibilities.

The Giants hit the field Thursday for their first practice of training camp with a roster reshaped by Gettleman. He traded for linebacker Alec Ogletree, signed left tackle Nate Solder and linebackers Kareem Martin and Connor Barwin in free agency and selected Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 pick in the draft and guard Will Hernandez in the second round.

    • Varying degrees all around but it starts at the top. That is where the buck stops. It has been 8 years of stupid, long before Morgan came back. Or Tillis was hired. Made it to the top of stupid mountain in 2023. Stayed in stupid limbo for a while, now we are prepping to scale the next mountain. In this case, I like those guys’ roster building better than what we have had so I am okay with them as our current pawns in the game of Bryce.
    • Don't let me gas him up too much, but I hear this and that...... I seen a wide body man with a quick burst, that's able to shed blocks and if extends his long arms its over. He tore up the OL in the senior, you seen about 10 plays and the dog walking OLman. There's other plays of him doing the same, just have to deal with fetus talking over the plays. Plus there's this-  https://x.com/PFF_College/status/2018385471068332410?lang=en     I hope he's ready, cause Id like to see him starting and doing his thang with dbrown, nic, and Phillips.
    • I mean there is relevance to that. But I think much of it has to do with the fact that he is clearly likeable. But does that translate to a coach taking his position to the next level like those that have had staying power for many years like Spoelstra? And not for nothing but does how much someone is liked even matter? Across leagues with the Panthers Ron Rivera and Marty Hurney were universally well liked by players. Dave Canales is very well liked. I say you are what your record says. And the record says you got your ass handed to you by a fellow expansion team in the Magic in a game that was over at halftime and that same team went toe to toe with our nemesis who has been handing us L's for over a year now. And if Bam doesn't get his leg swept by LaMelo do we even get past the Heat? Again. It just all boils down to personal standards. I think newer and younger fans will love this. I just want to actually win a real playoff game fam 🤷‍♂️
