Minor note on Turner

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

One of the highlights this evening showed Newton looking like he was going to run and then tossing a quick pass to Devin funchess.

The whole league expects Newton to run frequently. That play makes me wonder if Turner plans to exploit that expectation.

Strikes me as a smart move if he does.

I've always felt like Shula did a god awful job at maximizing the potential effectiveness of our offense by failing to capitalize on the dual threat Cam presents an opposing defense. Sure, we allowed him to run a lot and sure we allowed him to pass a lot. But there were very few plays where we presented the threat of both. We damn near never ran bootlegs, rollouts, run/pass options, etc. Cam was either a runner or a passer on a play, very rarely was their the threat of both because honestly in recent years Cam very rarely scrambles. He'll scramble to buy time to throw, but he rarely tucks and runs in recent years.

That's a very good way of putting it...

Seriously, for years and years the Huddle has called for bootlegs at minimum.  The 4th and 1 roll outs with the option to run, or pass to (usually) Greg were essentially always successful.  And we abandoned or rarely used anything that put Cam in the open field with options. Shula, Shula, Shula.

We've run rpos with Newton for seven years. I believe it was Rivera on Wfnz this week saying they've been doing them since the beginning but the public just found the term recently with the Eagles. Though an RPO doesn't mean it looks like one and turns out to be the other. It isn't a fake, it's a choice .

Though I certainly agree on other points.

Great post, I always felt like Cam scrambled less than people think.  It always felt like we just used Cam as a running back with better blocking numbers.

Cam’s rushing yards each game always felt more difficult than someone like Russell Wilson’s.

It felt like 30% of the passing plays at fan fest last night were rollouts.  Maybe that's a little high simply because I got all giddy when they actually moved the pocket from that porous offensive line.

On the play where KK pancaked Amini on his ass the only saving Grace was that Cam had a bootleg right.

You know, I know we were all sick of Shula and are all horny that Norv and Tepper are here. However I also want to float an idea.

When Cam came in, he was the star of this team ( I argued with you ppl Luke was the REAL star, but that's a different discussion). Cam came in with all kind of hype/controversy/hate/exceptions...all that poo.

When Shula came on board he was the coordinator for a superstar young qb. Great, but I believe he let that intimidate him to the point that he let Cam dictate to him what (then young/hungry/confident/brass balls) Cam said he wanted to do. We all like to blame Shula for bad play calling, and man that is well deserved. BUT...hear me now...BUT, I believe he did that because he knew damn well Cam was more powerful in terms of importance to this team than he was....and allowed that younger Cam to dictate to him what plays should and should not be called based on what Cam felt like he could do. Cam wasnt calling all the plays, but I believe Shula was influenced by Cams importance to the point he put Cam out there as a runner/option more than he should have...because CAm was insistent he could do it.

Cam has grown into a full grown man now, ( i wont say matured...we all love it but damn hes still a clown) and with that I believe a more humble attitude to take instruction more than he was inclined to do in previous seasons..and listen to what a coordinator suggests rather than try to force his own play style.

I dont believe for a second Shula had only 1-2 quick throw options for Cam. I believe he let Cam tell him I dont need quick throw because I'm gonna throw downfield or I'm gonna run it. Cam has gotten older, taken hits...surgery...etc and wised up. It's great for him, but I am not ready to put the hopefully upcoming success on Norv alone just yet. Seems to me Cam finally came of age, and the timing just works out that Norv is entering at the same time.
