Taylor Heinicke and the 2019 draft

You guys do know this guy is the only healthy QB on the roster, right?

The only reason Cam isn't on IR today is because there's nobody else but Heinicke. If Heinicke were to get injured in one of these last 2 games, Cam will be on the field, regardless of how hurt he may be.

If Carolina were to find an emergency QB to sign in the next couple days (Colin K), you might see Cam on IR.

Going forward, this team will likely go back to a 3-QB roster with a medically uncertain starter in Cam Newton

Shaq Thompson was IR'd and Kyle Allen was promoted to the 53.

Cam Newton hasn't had an NFL arm this season either.  I actually think that we'll be more of a downfield threat on Sunday with Heinike than we've been at any time this year.

You’re welcome to think that but it’ll only take about three possessions for you to change your mind.

There’s Herbert, Lock and maybe Grier round one.  This doesn’t seem like a good QB class but those sometimes are the onesies that end up producing a random starter or two in the mid rounds. Finley would make some State fans happy though I’m unsure of him and Daniel Jones. The buffalo and northwestern guys are interesting.

This is another 2013 draft as far as QBs. Better to wait until 2019 and get by on the Brock Osweilers of the world if Cam can't go next year.

I'm not sold on ANY of the QBs in this draft as being potential starters, let alone franchise QBs.

Heinicke is my guy... my backup guy to Cam Newton... moving forward.

Taking a QB in this draft at all would show we're desperate. We have WAY bigger needs.

What 2nd round or later QB has ever come in their rookie season and lit it up? It’s hard enough to find a rookie who can contribute in the first round.

Russell Wilson is the first name that comes to mind.

Edit: Derek Carr and Dalton played as a rookies, but I'm not sure what your criteria for "lit it up" would be.

I think you still have to draft one. Heinicke is on a 1 year deal. If he looked great, we'd likely get outbid by someone who will let him compete for a starting job. Even if we thought Cam was done, he's still under contract for north of $20 million.

TH will be a ERFA then RFA so we basically have him under control cheap for 2 more years after this one...

If we're giving Cam the year off, I'd say ride with someone from FA and still have Taylor back him up. At that point, I'd spend a high pick (which we will have lol) in 2020 on a QB, when better prospects are available, an see how Cam comes back with insurance.  At that point Cam will be playing in a contract year and you'll have insurance. If his body can't come back after two years of healing, it's time to move on. If he does come back, we can trade said 2020 pick for picks/players or develop to take over one day.

Dak too but that may have been his peak...
