The quarterback position going forward

From Rodrigue's article...

Head coach Ron Rivera Rivera said Wednesday that the medical staff will likely brainstorm with different surgeons, physical therapists and specialists as they develop a strategy.

But it is clear the plan will focus on the big picture for Newton and the organization.

“I can tell you that our doctors, our training staff along with Cam have really discussed a lot of things, and they’re probably still formulating that,” Rivera said this week. “They’re going to exhaust every avenue in terms of preparing some sort of program, some sort of plan going forward into the postseason (and next) preseason.”

Will it be as drawn-out as Luck’s? It’s likely the Panthers don’t even know that, right now.

But like the Colts eventually did, the Panthers must understand the importance of time, to get Newton right — for good.

What can Newton and the Panthers learn from Luck and the Colts?

(FYI: Rodrigue's full article is well worth the click)

I'm not a fan of reading too much into things, but it definitely sounds like the Panthers accept the possibility that Newton's shoulder issues might take a lot longer to heal than they hoped.  The fact that they're consulting several medical people (despite Newton's statement that he wasn't seeking a second opinion) is telling.  Likewise, using a guy who sat out a full season as a point of reference (Luck) sounds just a tad ominous.

The most interesting point to me though is Norv Turner's statement that the team doesn't want to be "caught in this situation again".

That and similar statements make me think the team is going to look long and hard at the backup QB position this offseason, and it's possible that all options - yes, including the use of a high draft pick - could be on the table depending on how things play out.

The hope is obviously that Newton's recovery goes well and that he's ready to go at full speed next season.

But it does sound like the Panthers are prepared to take measures to safeguard themselves in case he isn't.

Bridgewater aside, pretty slim pickings in free agency:

RG3

Tyrod Taylor

Landry Jones

Geno Smith

Brock Osweiler

Trevor Siemian

Josh McCown

Nate Sudfeld

Tom Savage

Ryan Fitzpatrick

Colt McCoy

No Kaepernick? Depending on what kinda shape he is in, why not kick the tires? We already signed Reid, what’s one more activist?

There will be some names pop up after the season.

We are in a very funny spot right now.

1:  Cam is hurt, and no one knows the severity.

2:  We don't know who the GM of the team will be going forward.

3:  We think that Ron may be back for 1 more season, but aren't sure about that right now.

4:  We have some big decisions coming with Olsen, TD, Kalil's, backup QB, Funchess, Peppers, etc....lots of big decisions.

5:  Coming off an absolute plummet/horrible season.

The Panthers are at a pretty big crossroads right now, and I don't trust 1 single person in the front office.

Fun times.
