Would you be willing to sit Cam an entire season and see how he does after?

There’s an upside to sitting Cam in 2019...

Of course it means we suck but it also means there’s a very good chance Ron and Marty are gone, and the qb class for 2019 is stacked.

Wait, if Tepper is giving Rivera/Hurney a pass for this season because Cam was injured for half of it, why wouldn’t they get a pass for him sitting out a full season?

If you're a win now team you're already looking for a QB that can carry you to the playoffs or better. Josh McCown comes to mind if he's got something left, not a threat to Cam's job at all and not overly expensive. Give Cam a year to heal while building up the lines and still being competitive.

i hate to invoke andrew luck, but look at him rifling passes into tiny windows tonight compared to the ducks he was lofting two years ago.

if cam's shoulder legitimately needs a year or more of rest and repair, fug it, make it happen. this is a long game and a healthy cam can play another five to ten years if he wants.

So if they do sit him a year and have a top pick next year with a talent like Tua sitting there.... Do you draft the qb or assume Cam’s shoulder will hold up after a year off??

That’s the thing. If he sits he could very well be done here. Even if he comes back 100%, how long does he last? 3-5 years?

If we had a real shot at Tua ( or similar qb) we’d be stupid to pass it up. I love Cam, but you don’t trade a chance for a 15+ year franchise QB to keep (with a big contract) the current franchise QB for another 5 years or so.

stack the OL and DL this year, and get ready to draft a new QB next if it comes to that.

If that's what it takes, absolutely.

Now the downside of that is that there are only two years left on his contract so you're sacrificing half the time he has left.

If you sit him you have no choice but to sign him to another 4-5 year extension so you think of it as sitting him for a fifth of his time left, minimum. If that’s not in your plans then drafting a quarterback becomes priority one.

No.  I think we have the pieces to win without Cam though it would be awesome if he were healthy.  If we have the ability to win....we should certainly try.  I love Cam....but I love watching the Panthers winning more then I love Cam's brand.

It seems like the Panthers are more concerned in protecting their brand then winning right now which is disconcerting.

I would enjoy a Superbowl victory equally as much regardless of who's behind center.

I don't see them signing an extension while he's healing.

Honestly, I don't think it's a given that Tepper will be willing to spend the kind of money a Newton extension might take.

God I wish it were that simple.  Shoulder pain is a shifty thing.  Cam may think he's ok, go half the season and one bad hit and we're right back...oh that already happened.

That could still happen after resting his shoulder this year, though assuredly less likely if Cam genuinely rests it.

Maybe Cam just needs to be more honest with himself and the coaches during the game when he's hurt.  We either need to pull him out of the game more or change strategy more when he can't throw accurately.

Part of Cam's second half crap play though, was just bad reads, not just bad passes.  I know in the NFL there is a lot of glory in threading the needle on those contested throws, it worked like magic in 2015... but maybe we need to tuck and run a little more when funchess...ahem, I mean the reciever... hasn't manage to create ANY space.
