Mel Kiper's First 2019 Mock - 01/17/19

Recommended Posts

Talent evaluation is not Kiper's forte (eg. Jimmy Clausen and Ricki Stanzi, which by the way, he should be retired right?), but if you just look at how the picks land with each team, his odds are about average, so not sure why this guy gets the hype.

I’m not down for that. The 4th best tackle in a class that’s just OK. Maybe I’m missing it with these tackles but it doesn’t feel like they are that good. That said tackles are always ranked way high in pre-draft rankings. Cam Robinson was top 5 and Orlando Brown was mid first before combines and workouts.

If like Moore last year we are picking whatever WR we want, that’s fine at least we are getting the guy we think is the top tackle. If we do that we damn well better not have signed Williams and we better be going hard at one of the FA DEs.

Down with getting one of the FA DE, they tend to take a couple seasons before they really season anyway.

Frank Clark or one of them would work out just fine for us— the dude from Phily too— Phily is 12 million over the cap right now so I don’t see how they keep anyone(strange things happen).

Greg Little the OT, I’m all about a LT if we could get a good one—

some of his scouting reports I don’t like— some say “questionable effort”— I really don’t like those types of comments.

thats why I liked Jawann Taylor better— although he hasn’t played LT— but some reports say he’s got the most ability— would have to start on the right.

theres a 2nd round OT that is a LT and I have to watch more videos, but all of his scouting reports sound good— might be a great play if we get the best DE first and a guys like that 2nd. Again I don’t know enough about him yet to say omg that’s the guy but I like what I saw so far.

Williams is the big question mark— whether he stays or goes— it will depend on what he wants I guess.

Only way id touch Burns is if we were moving to a 3-4.

Dude came to FSU as a 3-4 OLB.  Played OLB until this year under the new staff with the new system.

Haynes had the quickness and showed it in camp.  But was only active 1 game until our final 2 when we threw in the towel.  BECAUSE HE GOT PUSHED AROUND.

So draft another guy thats the exact same soze as Haynes.  He11 no

Plus as far as Kiper.  He's supposed to be retired by now

It's a terrible first round overall from a Panthers perspective. The top 5 EDGE gone (Bosa, Allen, Gary, Ferrel, Polite). Two DTs gone (Q. Williams, Oliver), 3 OTs (J. Williams, Ford, Taylor) 2 CBs (G. Williams, Baker). The only picks that aren't at a position of huge need were 2 QBs (Haskins, Murry) and a LB (White). Not a single WR, RB, or TE - areas of least need - even if Son of Olsen retires, Thomas showed well.

Edit: Actually no safeties taken yet. You could the top Safety if you wanted, but that's never been a big priority for this team under the current leadership.

I don’t know anything about the pick,.. I’m ok with an OLB to replace TD if they were another TD.

but with Greg Little still on the board going 2 picks later,.. and stating that he may be the only true Left Tackle in the draft...

i would have to say that we would take the left tackle.

My issue or concern with Little is his motor.  There is talk that he is one of those guys that could shut it down after he gets his big first contract.  I am tired of players like this.

We payed KK and haven’t seen him since.

I was watching the NE game the other day when I was impressed by their DE Flowers.  When I went to go read his draft profile there it was.  He is a high motor guy that never quits.  We neeed more of those players.

Not saying that Little won’t work out.  I just want high quality guys so we are not in this Khalil situation again.

Love the motor of a second round guy Chase Winovich from Michigan

Yeh I’ve read that about Greg— that’s a big flag—

Flowers is a BB guy— the problem there is would Ron be smart enough to duplicate the results,... Bill moves him around, knows how to get the best from him.

i like him otherwise.

i haven’t researched Chase— I’ll look him up since you mentioned him.

Agreed,  not liking how that fell.  I’d move down if possible if this happened.  If all else fails just build the OL and upgrade the defense in FA.

Too many holes to fill so let’s get that offensive loaded up and try to win some games that way.

    • I am optimistic that we might be on the verge of fielding a sustainable offense finally. The Bryce stats listed above are definitely encouraging. I don’t want to overly inflate this and disregard the previous 1 and a half seasons of production from Bryce and “cherry pick” stats but do hope the benching turns into an inflection point in his trajectory.      Lots of excitement heading into this season.
    • Summary The 2024 Carolina defense posted a 44.9 grade last year, which was the worst in the NFL since 2020. They also had the worst receiving grade in the NFL despite a QB that emerged in the second half of last year. TMac is most likely WR1 in this class and is now WR1 in Carolina He's going to be incredibly helpful on go balls, dig routes, and in the redzone. Highlights show just that: First highlight is Arizona vs. Utah. 4 verts vs. cover-0, TMac lined up alone on a go ball vs. press = we're launching it Second highlight shows his potential as the X. Runs a backside in-cut and the Tampa-2 MLB sells out on the corner route, leaving his back to TMac. Tough over the middle, explosive after the play. Sees TMac doing a lot of what Mike Evans was asked to do in Tampa. Third highlight shows how effective TMac is in the redzone and it's his one-handed catch vs. Travis Hunter. Brings "indefensible plays." Has size advantage that can beat guys, can jump, and has ridiculous hands. Will help Bryce in year 3 as it will allow him to continue playing "fearless" like he did after coming back from benching. Highlights show where TMac fits and re-emphasizes how he's going to make things easier on go balls, dig routes, and in the redzone: Fourth highlight shows Bryce vs. ATL when he hit AT vs. AJ Terrell down the sideline. Bryce has to hold the single deep safety during his drop to give Thielen a chance (who is only 4yds off of the LOS when Bryce is throwing it). Registers the big-time throw attacking vertically. Fifth highlight is vs. KC on a blitz where Bolton is coming downhill while Karlaftis is dropping back over the middle. Has an in-route that has outside leverage with Chris Jones applying immediate pressure. Layered it over Karlaftis' head for the completion. Sixth highlight is the fade route TD to David Moore vs. Zona. in the redzone. David Moore was the X on this play. Thought this was interesting, especially considering recent conversations about Bryce's intermediate game needing to be better:
