Barnwell seems to be pretty solid at giving general ideas on what a team should look at.  While all too often the issues are clear to see, a ton of pundits seem to either genuinely not get it, or trying to outdo themselves by being the first person to give an outside of the box hot take.  Barnwell seems to get the Panthers issues pretty regularly, from what I remember.  For instance, his 5 off season moves for the Panthers were to find a LT, replace Kalil at center, decline Butler 5th year, get a Free Safety, get some edge rushing.  This is what he feels the current top agenda item for the Panthers is:

Lock up James Bradberry. As the cornerback former general manager Dave Gettleman drafted to replace Josh Norman, Bradberry has been pushed into the starting lineup since Week 1 of his rookie year. The returns have generally been good. The 25-year-old Bradberry has played like an above-average cornerback for three years running, although the entire defense collapsed during a disastrous second half last season.

The only thing missing from Bradberry's game has been takeaways. He has forced two fumbles and picked off five passes in 45 games, which is part of why Panthers fans took to Donte Jackson when the rookie picked off four passes in the first half of 2018. Interceptions are a poor way to judge defensive backs and less sticky from year to year than just about any other individual statistic. Bradberry could play just as well in 2019 as he has in previous years and piece together a five-interception campaign on sheer randomness.

In an NFC South in which the Panthers could face Julio Jones, Michael Thomasand Mike Evans six times if everyone stays healthy, good cornerback play is critical. Even if Jackson continues to develop, the Panthers need to keep Bradberry. He won't be able to command the $15 million annual average Xavien Howard got in a relatively team-friendly deal from the Dolphins, but Bradberry's new contract should come in between $12 million and $13 million per campaign.

Not saying we shouldn't lock Bradberry up, but $12-$13 million seems high.  That's Top 10 CB Janoris Jenkins / Stephon Gilmore money.  I don't think he's that.  I could see 10 million per.  That puts him in Aqib Talib / Dre Kirkpatrick territory, which sounds more reasonable.

I think part of the 12-13 estimation is reflective that it won't be Gilmore money by 2020.  Gilmore got 13/year for the 2017 season.  Which will be 3 years before Bradberry's new contract hits.  If Gilmore was up for a contract extension today, he'd be getting much more than 13.

Don't get me wrong.  I'd love it to be 10m.  But the NFL salary cap has gone up about 10m/year lately.  It was 167m in 2017 when Gilmore got 13/year.  Its 188m this year.  Probably 198m next year.

Bradberry is going to get paid.  The closest contract I can come up with for him is actually Glilmore.

He's a really good corner who keeps his mouth shut, doesn't get into off field issues, and has been very healthy....can't ask for much more from him.

I thought we should have locked him up at the end of the season last year, but whatever.

Agree with this.  Bradberry may not be a household name but I would think he would be at the top of a CB needy team's wish list if he hits the market.  Dude will get paid and he deserves it.  He might not be catching many footballs but neither are the guys he is covering.  GMs and scouts know this.

In the NFC-South cornerback and secondary play are critical. Why we don't seem to get that is strange. But locking up Bradberry is critical. Then again I bitched when we let Norman go and we went from Superbowl contender to pretender in one year.  What about that vet free safety this year?

Bradberry is honestly one of the top CBs in the NFL against the better big WRs. We just so happen to be in a division with three teams that feature those very types of WRs. The Bucs have Mike Evans. The Falcons have Julio. The Saints have Michael Thomas. Retaining Bradberry is a must. His lack of INTs is what will keep the contract manageable.

It would be hard to point to anyone on the team who has been as consistent as Bradberry over the same time period. Not Cam, not Keuchly, not Olsen, not Ryan K. Maybe CMC in another year or two? Any if there is a salary multiplier for lack of drama, he should get the highest one available.

      Yep, like I said, I don't mind guaranteeing them money, but make the contracts smaller amounts in order to minimize cap implications. I don't know about "half," the actual amounts, whether more or less than half, would have to be determined by the NFL and NFLPA (which will probably be highly contentious, if not "impossible").  I'm just for whatever leads to the best product on the field while also unaffecting my wallet. As an aside, the NFL owners are greedy bastards in my estimation. They're trying to keep a larger portion of the pie, but players' agents are greedy as well, and they've sewn seeds of greed among the players. It's not all their fault; we all know what our society has evolved into, but the NFL wants a bigger piece of our smaller pocketbooks and refuses to "negotiate" with us (that's why we don't have cheaper and more reasonable à la carte options to view games that they're gradually trying to migrate to paid TV), so fu<k 'em. And then on top of that we have guys trying to water down the product even more by feeding greed. Change the way things are done so that we can at least see players prove themselves on the field without throwing wrenches into the engine that pays guys that have proven they can play on a pro level.

      OK, I didn't realize this was about high school, but...if I'm spending my personal money trying to help some kids out, then no one is going to tell me how to spend my money. I get enough of the government spending my money--allocating my tax dollars--to children who don't really need anything, and now they're trying to tell me how to spend my personal money? Sure, there are many other issues to consider and rabbit holes that we could go down due to ethical concerns because it concerns kids, and the need for transparency is extremely important, but maybe as opposed to trying to stop kids from benefitting in darkness, we need to open up the blinds (and blinders) a little bit so that they can benefit in the light. I get where you're coming from, but this is a loaded and layered issue, and I'm just trying to give you some food for thought.
