Could This be the Next Panthers' GM?

The Steelers unquestionably have become excellent at finding talent. The man primarily responsible for doing so could be taking his talents elsewhere next year.

G.M. Kevin Colbert’s contract runs through the 2020 draft. As explained by Ed Bouchette of TheAthletic.com, Colbert didn’t get an extension on the same day coach Mike Tomlin received his latest new deal. Bouchette adds that Colbert has told the team he prefers to go year to year.

That approach gives both sides flexibility; the Steelers can move on with minimal financial cost, and Colbert can walk away for a better offer or a change of scenery.

Right now, the next GM is still Marty Hurney. And that's not a bad thing at all.

Make no mistake, I think Hurney has done a fine and even admirable job during his second stint with the team. However, I suspect that another season like last season will be a precursor to wiping the slate clean for Tepper and reconstituting that "slate" would likely begin with the appointment of a new GM.

Last season isn’t entirely on Hurney. Yes there were serious depth issues but the team was 6-2 with a healthy Cam.

So you're anticipating another season like last season?

Not a fan of Colbert. He had some real hits in the draft, much like Hurney.... but his FA acquisitions were mainly miss rather than hit. Also, his blemishes were well hidden by his draft picks.  He has been at the helm there for a long time, and constantly put together a good run. However, I just dont see a huge difference from going Hurney to Colbert.

Also, Colbert didn't take locker room personalities into account when making his decisions. Steelers have had a lot of good talent leave due to that locker room cancer. He has taken a lot of risks, and not many paid off.

It's the wrong time of the year to be focusing on a GM switch. It's good to have options if needed though.

I'm not sure what to think of Colbert as a GM candidate. I don't follow the Stealers at all and I don't know if he didn't see personality issues with some of their guys or it was a group effort. He has experience and has been successful in putting a competitive team on the field every year so it sounds like he is setting himself up for the option to go GM when he finds a good fit. 4 or 5 months from now, it sounds like he will be in the conversions that start up around that time of year.

Also, don't forget the players we lost before the season even began:  2 CB's who were clearly better than Munnerlyn / Elder and you might as well say we lost D Williams at tackle before the season started.  Matt Kalil never played.  Oh, and Eric W calling the defense was a disaster.  And Olsen going down.  And Cam.  Etc.

Face it, Hurney gave the coaching staff a team with playoff talent.  That's all you can ask your GM to do.

No season good or bad is ever completely on one person, but as a GM when your roster has serious depth issues, yes that's largely on you.

I hope this guy isn't our next GM because I hope we have a great season and I doubt we'd make a GM change after a great season.

Not sure how much Hurney was being manipulated by JR---but when Marty was not under Fox's influence (his "lame duck" year),  He tried to trade up for (and drafted) Clausen, he traded up in the third round for Armanti Edwards, and grabbed Eric Norwood in the fourth.  Brandon Lafell was the other selection.

So who knows how good he is?  He has done well, but a pattern of success would be nice.

    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
    • Well, seeing as we play the Lions at home this year, pretty sure that rumor isn't true.
    • Totally possible imo, I also caught that snippet from Morgan where he said “If” we sign him. The lack of competition says otherwise tho 🤷‍♂️
