The Long Ball

We don't know yet whether Cam throw the ball deep. My point was about all the whining about not throwing the ball deep ....All the time. F that. Go for it occasionally to keep the defense honest. Just like running up the middle. But the harping on throw it deep throw it deep seems to be more about Fantasy points than good play calling.

Cam has not shown that he can consistently throw deep in some time now.  Until that is confirmed with in game action, defensive coordinators are going to be able to severely hamper our offense.

Nobody here is looking to drop bombs all over the field, but chunk plays in the passing game are absolutely needed to take some pressure off of Cam and CMC.

i'm not saying you shouldnt take a couple shots, but i agree the obsession is weird. we have an OLine that can't pass protect, a QB whose biggest knock is that he holds the ball too long, and we were playing against the most disruptive defensive player in football yesterday. the achilles heel for this team has been lack of pass protection and long developing plays that put us behind the chains and allows teams to pin their ears back on 3rd down. it's not sexy and there is something to be said about keeping the defense honest but the reality is we have 3 guys that are almost impossible to tackle 1 on 1 in the open field and a QB that is (usually) a threat to take off and burn you if you lose containment. with the personnel we have we can easily score more than 25 a game and carve defenses up if we run the ball, dont turn it over, and dont get behind the chains. those 3-4 yard passes to McCaffrey/Moore/Samuel that turn into 15 yard gains are what hurts a defense. We dont need to be launching 60 yard bombs like Mahomes to have a good offense. there are no (if very little) teams that have the speed on defense to keep us from moving the ball even if its with short passes - too much speed and too much elusiveness to not allow 10 yards over 3 plays. the Rams last 3 games have been against us, the Pats and the Saints - 2 teams that are considered the Super Bowl favorites, ask me which of the 3 had the most success on offense?

What the hell is the obsession with the long down field pass. Posters screaming " they didn't throw any deep passes" Who gives a poo. I'll take moving the ball in 4-5 yard chucks over a hail mary any day. If the QB has to dink and dunk the entire game who cares. Move the chains. Win the game.

Go play madden

The long ball is coming. We expect Cam to be what he was 3 years ago after having 2 surgeries and thinking I got to throw short. Its a big mental change that Cam will get over shortly. He has to get comfortable throwing deep again. He didnt even have a preseason to get his timing back. So why would we expect deep shots just because he did them in practice when we know game speed is totally different. I expect some long shots against the bucs.

It’s a goofy notion, because had the rams thought we couldn’t go deep I guaranteed the underneath routes would have been smothered. People act like cam was throwing into tight windows all game, disappointed like any fan we lose but we lose as a team. People act like Goff was chunking it down field, I guess he’s scared to throw downfield too

"dinking and dunking" doesn't work if you can't threaten a defense vertically.

Inherent to the philosophy itself is the need to scare teams down the seams when they inevitably catch on and line up in their cover 2.

I presumably don't need to harp on the  record since we stopped taking shots.

Yes and shittsburgh called are bluffed last year and showed the league how to stop us. It's not that we didn't, and i'll give the benefit of the doubt for the issue with pressure. However, it shows that Cam's shoulder is still a no and if we don't try hitting posts, seams or fly routes greater than 20 yards against THE BUCS, you'll have your answer b/c most likely it'll be a loss. I feel like this offense is nothing but nursing the clock as compared to running the ball 2 yards at a time.

    • Madden has been in a bad state for well over a decade now but the best recent change they've made was making the rating distrubition harsher IMO. Whenever I try to play a MyLeague in the newer games pretty much every single one of your starters will be 85+ if you want to win a championship and you need probably 3 90+ guys. There's like zero seperation between the players on the court it seems like, someone ranked 85/99 should be a great player going off the percentage but instead that's essentially an average starter. Having a larger rating gap between the superstars and the JAGs highlights the difference in skill a lot better, whereas in 2K some team's 4th best defender can square up your 96 overall superstar thus causing the gameplay to feel rather homogenous.
    • I think, if the stars align, and the light comes on for XL and Metchie finds his way, and Brazzell's early returns are accurate--man, this team could be LOADED at WR.  Six will make it: TMac Coker XL Brazzell Metchie Tremayne Moore Horn
    • Personally, I think the Panthers would be a good place for a QB if he falls to maybe a 4th rounder or later.  I am not sure how they feel about the gambling and I am not sure of the details, but I think we have to plan for life without Bryce as much as we are planning for life with him.   I like Sorsby the player.  I see the Jets going after him if they have concerns about Klubnik-and they need competition for him anyway and a future replacement for Geno (who I think will suck back in NY).  Watch Atlanta, Cleveland, Indy, Miami, too, but Carolina is the team nobody is talking about, and Sorsby would be better than Kenny Pickett and maybe Haynes King is slated to always be the third QB/etc ST and Swiss Army knife--if he makes the team.   If Bryce falters, we need a QB who has potential, and Sorsby has it.  Pickett will never be a starter in this league, so his role is a #2.   I would be surprised if Morgan pulls the plug, but at worst he is a good backup and potential developmental starter.  To me-on paper--it makes too much sense.
